Laws concerning the shipment/purchase of BP arms.
« on: January 16, 2005, 07:12:09 AM »
How do the laws differ in the shipment or purchase of BP from regular cartridge arms? The last time I purchased a modern pistol (it's been awhile) there was a waiting period. Does this apply to BP? If I buy a BP from a online or catalog supplier, does it need to be shipped to a FFL holder? Thanks.

There are no federal restrictions on purchase and shipping of bp guns, no waiting period.
There are some states with restrictions, including Illinois, NY, New Jersey and a few others.
Some muzzleloaders are considered modern firearms and have the same federal restrictions as any centerfire. The two I know of are the NEF Huntsman, and the TC Encore. These are legally modern firearms because a centerfire barrel can be put on the receiver.
Aim small don't miss.

Jim G, even though your not in commifornia, they have a law that if it uses the 209 primer system it has to be registered like any other long gun and is suppose to be sent to a ffl dealer. Only the yellow sheet is required, but still have the 10 day waiting period.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm not likely to be buying anything right now nor will it likely have a 209 primer for ignition. I'm mostly interested in some of the basic, no frills, percussion and flintlock rifles and shotguns. Some of the cap and ball revolvers have caught my eye though. I'm going to order a couple books on BP shooting on monday.

Jim, once you get the smell of black powder in your nose its not enough, youll want more. Bought my son in law a traditions 50 cal. rifle for christmass 3 yrs ago. He now also has 2  44 pistols pistols to go with it. Him andI burn up a lot of pyrodex (nobody carries b/p around my area for almost, 100mi's) I spend several days, casting r/b and maxi bullet for us. Right now I have a 50 cal but looking to get a 54 lyman trade rifle (had one and let it get away), that I might just start hunting with. I use Lee moulds for the r/b and maxi.
