Sierra 120 HPBT vs Nosler 120 Ballistic Tip
« on: February 04, 2003, 12:53:06 PM »
Last fall the consensus was that 120 Nosler Ballistic Tips were a good all around choice fro white tail.. Does anyone have experience, good or bad with the Sierra 120 HPBT on deer?  I would be using it in a 15" Encore.

Thanks for any ideas.

what you shootin it out of? the HPBT sierra gameking bullets have a tougher jacket by design, than the spitzers. they are a pretty tough bullet. actually oposite of what i would think. the nosler bt's are good. sierra makes single shot pistol bullets that would work perfect. e-mail sierra, and they can tell you exactly how their bullet should react at different velocity levels. :D

Kyode, the 120's that I used last fall were out of the .260 Remington @ a little over 2500fps, from the 15" Encore.  The Nosler BT expanded fine, the Sierra 120 Spitzers did not expand so well.  The Fellas @ Sierra have been very helpful, and right on,  with suggestions for powedrs to try etc.
Maybe I will give them another call to confirm what I hear here.

I am relatively new to the TC game, only in my second year, and I went straight for the .260 Rem. based on research.  Wonder if the .260 Rem. would have more of a following if it were called the 6.5mmX08 or somethin like that?

Thanks for the suggestion.  Rol

when i went to buy a barrel, i was going to get the .260rem. they wasn't offering it as a factory barrel. so i just went ahead with the 15" 7mm-08. i love it . it's great. i'm sure the .260 would have been equally satisfying.

the 120gr nosler bt in 7mm worked for me this last year. i think they are a good bullet in handguns, generally speaking.

I used the Nosler 120 in my 7-30 this year and dropped a nice buck in his tracks.

I use the Sierra 120 for target shooting.  They are half the price of the Nosler and still let's you get familiar with handling the gun.

120 grain bt

Used the 120 grain balistic tip this fall on a whitetail, loved it.  I bought some 120 sierra soft points for the hunt and did not use them as someone on theis page did not think they expanded well enoegh.  I blasted that BT out of a 10" 7mm tcu at near maximum velocity, according to the relaoding manual and primer indicated pressures.  Accuracy was good and that doe never new what hit her, ran 20 yard circle and fell dead.  I think they might be worth the extra cash for deer but those good old seirra outlet store bullets are accurate and will be my choice for target varmit work.
