Range Report 7600 35 Rem and 35 Whelen
« on: October 25, 2004, 03:36:39 AM »
Well I finally went to the rifle range this week. First I shot the Remington 7600 carbine in 35Rem. I mounted a Nikon Prostaff 2X7 last week and bore sighted it. The first shot at 50 yards using Remington 200 gain SP's was 2" low and 2" to the left. After 8 clicks up and 8 right bullseye! Third shot bullseye! Back to the 100 it shot a bit low but still in the center so I raised it 2 clicks and proceeded to pour in 5 rounds in a 1 1/2" to 2" group on or touching the bull. Good to go. I am very happy. The scope was very clear and the eye relief perfect.

Next I shot the 35 Whelen. I still do not have a scope. I shot 2 shots at fifty yards, one with the Rem 200 gain SP and one with the 250 grain Rem soft point. Both were low and to the left almost touching. I raised and sight and moved it to the right and proceeded to shoot 2-3" groups with rifle sights at both 50 and 100 yards! Very happy. The 200 print a little higher than the 250's but without a scope you can't see much difference. The Whelen has a little kick to it, I had both a shooting shirt and shooting vest on so I was prepared. The 250's of course kick harder. When I get a scope I will try the Federal 225 grain trophy Bonded Bear Claws. MIKE.

Mike
Do they still make the rem 7600 in 35 Whelen?  Are both rifles carbines?  Have you chrono'd any carbine loads?

Sorry for all the questions, I am trying to decide between carbine and rifle.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

I bought my 7600 back in 88.  Using 200 grain round noses it is right on at 200 yards with the factory sights.  I have never had to touch them in 26 years straight from the factory!!

You might find that the 225 spirepoint is the one bullet to use unless you are hunting browns.  It will blow completely through a caribou and moose too.

I added a slip-on recoil to the .35 Whelen this year.

HR, The 35 Rem is a carbine but the 35 Whelen is a rifle. No I do not have a coronagraph. Yes the 35 Whelen is still available from Grice's in Clearfield, PA 814-765-2604. I am not sure if the 35 Rem carbine is available again this year. Give them a call. I really like these two guns. Go to the Remington web site, click on firearms and then go to specials. They are listed there. MIKE.

Mike, tell me more about the 35

I'm interested in buying a 7600 carbine in 35, does it have a lot of recoil or muzzel blast? I had a 308 with a 18 inch barrel. The blast and flame coming out of the barrel were tremendous.

Not really

With 200 and 225 grain bullets the Whelen will have no more recoil than a 30/06.  Actually a little less felt recoil.  Only when you get up to the 250's does it start to bite a bit.  You can by a Simms slip-on recoil pad and then it  really a pussy cat.

The 7600 carbine in 35 Rem is very mild. Like Dave said the 35 Whelen bites a bit. MIKE.

:D Hi, sombody please tell me you can still get the 7600 35 rem. I asked about this on another well known forum 6 months ago and was promptly told no way, i would have to find one on the used market, now i find out on this post that remington offered them on a special run for 2004, unbelievable !!! Every once in a while, i run into sombody on these forums who does not know his a-- from his elbow, but will post information on here like it was handed down to him by the good lord himself. This is so agrivating, i have wanted one of these for a very long time now. I am a 870 fan and wanted a pump rifle in this caliber to hunt deer with, i have come close a couple of times on the used market, but they wanted more than the gun sold for new ! I guess if want a pump rifle, it will have to be another caliber!!

I know you probably want the .35 Remington but there are lots of Whelens out there and it can be down loaded to .35 Rem. if you want.  I used to use light loads in upstate NY for deer.  Then if you want to go west or maybe Alaska, you will already hae a good gun.

I just bought a .35 rem carbine, and it is a nice rifle. I never thought I'd find one, then when coming home from hunting I stopped at the gun store and he had 2 of them. I have a 7600 in .35 whelen also. If you reload this is a very versatile caliber and easier to find then the 35 rem carbines as daveinthebush pointed out.

This is the place to go for all the special run 7600's. 35 Whelen, 35 Remington carbine, 25-06 and 7mm-08. I bought the first three from them. Great rifles and a great outfit to deal with. Your FFL can order one for you direct from Grices. MIKE.  http://www.gricewholesale.com/

:D Thanks guys, i will check those places out, see what i come up with. What would you guys consider to be a fair price to pay for one ? Dont mind paying a man an honest fair price, but if i think they are just trying to take advantage of my ignorance, it only ticks me off. There are 2 on guns america 550.00 each, what do you think ?Wanted to see what you guys thought before buying. Is this a fair price ? The add states they are NIB. The money is not the issue, i am one of those people who sorely hates to get screwed, its almost a phobia, cant help it !

Crapaw-

You can't get too tied up in trying to get the best price, no matter how much you pay for it a month later you will see one for less. Just try to find one in the general range of what thier going for and be happy with it.  It doesn't sound like too bad a price for a NIB remington, but I'm no expert.
