Cold Air Intake & fuel economy

After talking to the folks at Summit racing I installed a K&N cold air intake on my Chevy crew cab 3/4 ton. The truck has the 7.4l vortec engine and running unloaded I average 13mpg. After installing the cold air intake I now average 14.4mpg for the last 3500 miles. The cold air intake cost me about $230, the only problem I have seen with the intake is the noise, it's just a very low rumble when pulling or highway driving but if you put your foot in it the noise is pretty loud. The folks at Summit racing recommended the K&N and the Valant. Next step is to install headers and a dual exhaust. The goal is 16mpg.

You seem to have good results but mine were disappointing.  I didn't notice any difference at all on my two Dodge pickups.  One with a 5.9 gas and the other has a  5.7 Hemi.  I had a buddy of mine that just drilled holes in the bottom of his factory intake.  He seemed to think it made a difference, I just think he was lighter on the peddle.  I have not found anything out of the box that really made that big of a difference in the gas mileage department.   The only thing that happened was I was lighter in the wallet. The chips makers claim better mileage but all they do is advance timing. I bought one of those to and returned it immediately after getting all kinds of p codes and pinging....Good luck in your venture, I hope you have better results than I had.
