Reassurance needed, 38/55 Target
« on: January 15, 2005, 03:55:53 AM »
Gentlemen:
Please advise me. After reading some of the posts, I must ask just how serious is the "challange" and "weird dimensioning going on" with the 38/55 Target barrel? I'll be getting my Target model in a few days, and now you guys have me real concerned! Am I gettin a Lemon? If the Target model works as well as my 45/70 Handi, I'll be fine.
I do plan to shoot BP, cast and hopefully PP.
Being new to reloading, and bullet casting,  may I ask your advice, or at least get some reassurance. How bout the brutal truth? Beyond slugging the bore to determine bore dia. and measuring chamber and throat dimensions, how much more am I up against?
I told the man that if he got that particular gun in, I'd buy it. He did, I will. It ain't the rent and grocery money, and the most I'll have to defend myself and the womenfolk from is a paper target, so this is in proper perspective. Please understand that I'm not arguing or offering rebuttal. Indeed, how could I, cause I ain't done it yet, I don't know. And reading the books I have is only a necessary start. So bearing in my mind your experience and knowledge, I'm asking for your thoughts and advice.
And if no one answers my plea for help, and I'm mauled by a wounded and enraged paper target, it's gonna be all your fault!
                                                          Sincerly, Woodbutcher

Mine shoots great I've not had any problem other than the sights which I didn't like anyway fixed those with a williams FP from NEF now I just need to shoot it more. It dose like the .380 dia bullets and if you get Lee dies don't worry about them saying .375 on them they share the same case.(.38-55 is the parent case) Its a very light recoil fun to shoot rifle. 8)

Woodbutcher.
I have a .38-55 Marlin levergun. Mine shoots .380 cast like a dream. Right now I am shooting cast from the Lee mold. So far I have shot my smallest groups with this bullet. These are fifty yard groups with the standard Marlin rifle sights. .409" and .356" . These are three shot groups. Most of the time it will shoot in the middle 4's to middle 5's. Not bad for an open sighted rifle and 59 year old eyes.
Work with it, it  will shoot.  Hope this helps. BTW purchase a Lee factory crimp die, It sure helped my groups.

Hey Escalente, how ya doin? Yeah, I'll just bet your little Marlin shoots good, heard lotsa good things bout them. I hafta give this NEF a chance to show its stuff. Got a ways to go though, so I'm still stumblin over myself. Just tryin to learn as much as I can. The gentlemen on this site are a real treasure as far as knowledge and help, and with the info shared this will get worked out.  Lee factory crimp die, you say?
                                                                Thank you, Woodbutcher

Wood butcher, my shooting buddy has two Buffs and a Target model. We have not loaded for it yet, but picked up a couple boxes of reloads from the guy at the local gun show that seems to load for everything. We were getting 2 inch groups at 100yds. No special loads, nothing special for the Target model. I did ask what they were loaded with, but he just shrugged and said " the regular stuff".

I think we have a couple of the reloads left, I'll pull a bullet and mic it to see what size they are. I'm guessing the bulk loader is using Unique because he uses it in a lot of the ammo he reloads, but that's just a guess.

Woodbutcher, in the interest of full disclosure, I should say those weren't MY 2 inch groups! One of my major shooting problems is the guys I shoot with. One is a former high-power competitor who shoots often and a lot and outshoots me. The other shoot infrequently and only ten or twenty rounds, and HE outshoots me!

(Gotta get some different shooting buddies!)
