tikka t3 270 win or short mag?
« on: February 08, 2005, 01:54:02 PM »
Finally narrowed it down to a 270 winchester,Which I have always been fond of, or a 270 short mag.Basing the short mag on  200 FPS increase.Has anyone chrono'd any 270 winchester loads and 270 short mag loads in the t3.If so I would appreciate your findings.I am aware of folks talking about the velocity loss with the throats and the t3s.I have a t3 in 223 and with the loads I have chronon'd I havent had a loss in velocity in this caliber. All loads were within factory specs as far as speed.I thought maybe it was a problem only with the short mag cartridges in the t3 but I'm not sure.I think I'm leaning towards the 270 winchester and figure the velocity and bullet drop between it and the short mag out to 300 yds wont be much of a difference anyway.I'm just hoping the 270 winchester doesn't have a velocity loss because of the t3 throat.Anyone that has a t3 in either of these 2 calibers and has actually chrono'd some loads,I would appreciate your input,And anyone elses for that matter.Im getting one or the other in 2 days.

Wow thats a tuffy I have always wanted a .270 shorty as well. (BUT) If I were you I would go with the regular .270 Win. It's an awesome deer getter. The main reason I say this is because of the long action on all of the Tikka's. As far as the velocity difference between the long and the short, you can always buy and shoot the Hornady light mags or the Federal high energy. These hot loads will fill the gap, well almost, according to Federal the shorty will push a 140 grainer to 3200fps. and the .270 long High Energy will push a 140 to 3100fps. Another good reason to go with original is that you can buy a box of 130 or 150 core lokts in any mom and pop shop in the COUNTRY. I have a Tikka T3 Stainless lite but mine is a .30-06. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. It's a sweet rifle for sure.

I like the .270.  Bought a tikka whitetail hunter deluxe .270 last fall.  Shot less than 1" groups with 130 and 150 gr Win and Rem ammo so I plan to use it as my antelope gun.  I can reload for it but I see no reason.  Factory ammo is common and the caliber has been proven.   I reload and play with the less common calibers but the .308, .270 and 30-06 have never failed me when hunting.  I like to buy Rem. BDLs in the above calibers when someone sells them so they can go buy one of the new magnums. :D
