Good day for bunnies
« on: December 27, 2004, 11:30:14 AM »
I had to twist my own arm to go hunting today.  It was only 9F this morning.
By the time I got motivated at 11:30AM it was 17F.  Hunted a conservation area close to home. I had never flushed more than three rabbits there in a day of hunting before.  There was 6-8 inches on snow and it was easy to see were the rabitts were running.  I flushed 7, shot at six, and bagged two.  In 2 1/2 hours of hunting.  This was all by myself and no dog.

Boy I'm glad I got my rear in gear and went out.

Got to see plenty of deer sign too.

This is very cold for us here in southern Illinois.  Suposed to be up to 60F by next weekend.

One of my best days rabbit hunting was in near blizzard conditions.  It's amazing what weather you will hunt in when cabin fever sets in.  I couldn't believe the rabbits would be out in such terrible weather they must get cabin fever to.

You were lucky indeed!  Most of the time, when the weather is nasty and cold, the rabbits are underground or sitting so tight they don't want to run.  They must have been hungry!

Have been quite a few times so far this year and sure wish we would get a good blanket of snow. Have done pretty good but snow makes it better.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

Had the opposite problem today.  It made it to 72 degrees here in the piedmont area of North Carolina.  I have not been rabbit hunting since I was about twelve.  We got up at least twenty rabbits today and killed seventeen.  We had seven dogs on the ground at one time.  Boy did I have alot more fun than I do sitting in that treestand.

It's been my experience that rabbits like a warm winter day, and when it's cold they look for a hole real quick.  I've raised beagles over twenty years and agree there is nothing better than hunting over good dogs.....
