Rolltide, I can see where people would have trouble with this setup but I like it.  I bought mine back in 1980, 6" blue VH. Think I paid about $275. In the box was an extra barrel with no ports, and the instruction book stated very emphatically, do not use ported barrel with cast bullets I think it does a decent job of controlling muzzle flip, considering what it is. In 25 years, the new breed will think we were idiots, using compensators and muzzlebreaks on everything. I had my 357 Herrett Super 14 magnaported about the same time period and always wondered why they didn't use that instead. I pull mine down and scrub it out after every session.

JD,
I never could tell if I got any real muzzle control out of the ports.  I used it back in the 80's myself.  As long as you follow the instructions and clean religuously, there is not a thing wrong with the ports.  A lot of people don't do those things and it is one thing to watch out for when buying a used DW.  Porting presented a unique problem to DW because of the barrel and shroud design.  I think the compensated design they ended up with is really excellent.
