Opinions Wanted

I am looking at a NIB Savage model 112bvss in 25-06. This will be my first accutrigger savage and wanted to get opinions of this model from those who have it or know someone who has it. It will most likely be used on groundhog and yotes if purchased...... :D

DirtyHarry,
I can't tell you first-hand but the Savage is a worthwhile purchase.  I however, have reservations on using that caliber on hogs and 'yotes.......I think .223 or 22-250 better fitting unless you just want to vaporize your target.

25-06

The 25-06 is a very good caliber for larger game. It's an excellent deer caliber and some folks use them for boar and even elk. For the type of hunting you listed, I would go with something smaller. A 243 would work and still give you a deer capability with 100 grain pellets. Or if it was going to be used exclusively as you indicated I would also recommend one of the 22 calibers. The accutrigger is a very nice factory trigger.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

I too am thinking of getting this rifle for long range (over 400 yds) prairie dog hunting.  I choose this caliber because it is a proven long range cartridge.  So far I like what I have read on the 112 BVSS.  Also it is one of the few rifles in this caliber offered in a heavy barrel setup, which makes it ideal for prairie dogs.

The reason I am going with the 25-06 is kind of two fold, first is that the choice I have is either this or one in 300 winny and I have the 30 cal's well covered, second is I have been looking for a rifle to fill a need when it comes to ultra long shots on hogs, shots that i would pass up while using my 6mm and I believe Lawdog may have recommended this cal to me awhile back for long range shots but i haven't seen anything that struck my fancy til now..... :D

DirtyHarry,

Excellent choice on the Savage rifle and the .25-06 will certainly do the number on any varmint(within reason) you will come across.  For taking out small to medium size wild hogs I would suggest you go with the new Barnes TSX bullets in either the 100 gr.(which is what we used this year to take two nice ones with both a .25-06 and .25 WSSM) or the 115 gr. version.  A 75 gr. V-Max destroys smaller size varmints.  You like the combination then go for it because it will work for you.  Lawdog

Great rifle, great cartridge.  The internet has field test reports which show the Savage shoots groups better than other varminters costing much more. The 25-06 is a very accurate cartridge in a good rifle and very effective on big game with good bullets like Nosler partitions or Barnes X.

Thanks for all the info and opinions guy's.. :D  I brought the rifle home today, now I am waiting on some brass and the bullets Lawdog suggested. In the mean time I may buy a couple boxes of factory ammo to put through it.
I must say I am generally a Remington fan but they seem to be pricing themselves out of consideration with me, I just don't feel I'm getting my money's worth. I was also considering a Tikka and perhaps a Ruger, but since the barrel problems with some Tikka's and the fact that I just don't buy into the whole investment casting process at Ruger, and since Savage is at least making some attempts to inprove their product I decided to go with them.

Dirty Harry:  I suspect a lot of people will come to that opinion.   Maybe the other manufactures will stand up and take notice.  You have a fine rifle.  Enjoy it.
