T/C .vs. Bolt gun
« on: November 29, 2004, 01:51:02 PM »
Looking at a T/C and have a few questions... I have done a little bit of shooting/loading with a bolt gun in 308. I'm used to using a MTM cradle, and a Sinclare bore guide with solvent port for cleaning. How does cleaning work for a T/C With the action open, it doesn't seem like it would set in the cradle too well. Also, is there a bore guide/solvent port available for a T/C? If not, what is the easiest way to clean the gun without damaging the chamber. Also, what type of accuracy can be expected? I've got loads for my 308 (although too long for the magazine) that shoot less than 1/2" at 100 yards. Is this possible with a stock T/C? If not, what is needed to get these types of groups out of a T/C?

Yes, Sinclair sells a bore guide for 308 Encore chambers. Yes, the cradle is awkward, but it works, mostly. For cleaning I generally use a Patchworm rather than a brush and rod. There's no way you can do damage with one and they do a great job. I use Montana Extreme for the quick jobs and Wipe Out when I have at least a couple of hours for it to work. One other suggestion, you might want to shoot the 308 in the Encore a few times before you make a purchase. Although the 308 certainly isn't a hard recoiler, it can be stiff in this light rifle. A 260 Rem may do a better job for you. With either cartridge you should expect 1/2 to 1 MOA. I have had a 308 and currently hace a 260, both 22" barrels. Both would shoot under 1/2" with handloads. The 260  is the most accurate T/C barrel I've owned.

i'm shooting a 308 in the encore and i am not having any problems with the recoil but i am adding a sims recoil pad to help the encore to fit me a bit better. the gun is very tame for me as i am over 6 foot and weigh up there right around 290 and i have always thought the caliber is a smoother caliber when it comes to recoil. i am shooting factory bullets now and also have some loads int he nosler ballistic tips and will be testing them very soon as i do like the ballistic tips for deer. i almost forgot i am getting 3 shot quarter size groups and the barrel isn't even truly broke in yet so it;s a very accurate caliber
