.308 Ammo Suggestions
« on: November 29, 2004, 09:18:04 AM »
I've got a new Encore in .308 that I took deer hunting this year.  The ammo I used was some Federal Vital Shock 180 gr Nosler Partition.  Effective round... but it wasn't particularly precise (4in groups maybe).  I have shot some 150 gr Wolf FMJ and got some 3/4" groups out of it so I know the thing has the potential to do nicely, but the match between the Federal and this stuff doesn't seem to hot.

I've shot some Remington 165 BTHP thought it, but that was before I got a scope on it.

I really like the Nosler Partition round.  I was wondering how you decide what a good match is for a gun, or do you just keep trying different stuff?  Maybe I should try some 165 gr Noslers...

I dunno... what do you all use?

I shoot federal gold metal match and reloads only.  My hunting load is GMM brass, 45 grains Win 748, 165 Nosler partition, Federal 210 M primer, and I load .000" off the lands.  But, I shoot a bolt gun.  Just starting to look at T/C's.  I suspect the 180 grain doesn't do well in your gun due to twist rate.  Probably can't stabilize the bullet.  Most 308's I've come across seem to like the 150 to 168 grain bullets.

Good luck

Thanks... I was definitely thinking I had to go with a lighter bullet... but I don't reload (yet).  The thing shoots cheap 150 wolf nicely.

Anyhow... I was guessing about the bullet weight being the problem.

If you are interested in reloading, start at Sinclair International.  They are located in Fort Wayne Indiana.  Start with their $10 Precision reloading and shooting handbook.  Probably one of the better books on loading.

i got hold of some winchester 150 grain softpoints and they are great shooters and i would also suggest shooting some ballistic tips as well. they usually shoot very well and are very accurate as well. in my history with this caliber i have been fortunate to have no problems making the bullet work no matter which  grain it was and so far the encore is doing that for me so i hope it all works out for me
