Browning vs. Tikka
« on: October 29, 2004, 06:12:02 PM »
I have been considering a new rifle for a while and was really leaning toward a browning a-bolt composite stalker probably in 270 win.  A friend recently got a Tikka T3 and is really impressed with it.  I would like to get the opinion of someone who has both a Tikka and a Browning a-bolt.

I am currently hunting with a savage 270 and would like to upgrade to something new.  My major complaints with the savage is the heavy trigger (doesn't have the new adjustable trigger), the bolt is somewhat tight cycling, and the magazine doesn't feed well when loaded to capacity (4).

The Savage seems to be a good gun for the money.   I dropped a deer this afternoon with it, but I would still like something new.

Tikka

I've got the 25 WSSM in Browning A-Bolt and a 22-250 in the Tikka.  I really love the Tikka and several friends have picked one up in one cal or another because of me.  The Tikka has a very smooth bolt and shoots great.  The only reason I got the A-Bolt was because of the cal and it was the only one in the store.  I had gone to the gunshop to buy a .243 in Tikka but the guy did not have one, but he did have this new 25 WSSM and I picked it up.  If I had to do it over, I would get the Tikka in .243 and use the extra money to buy another good scope.  Price wise around here:  Tikka for about $450 vs. Browning at about $650-$700..... :D

Savage Trigger

Certainly buy another rifle because you never have enough toys. However, take the Savage to a gunsmith and have him rework the trigger. I did that with a pre-accutrigger Savage and I was very happy with the results.

Browning vs. Tikka

I have both and love both.  Here is my take on the two.

To Brownings...
Brownings are the favor for most in my neck of the woods.  Tell someone you have a Tikka and you get funny looks.  So, resale would be much greater with the Browning.   Fit and finish would be slightly toward the Browning.  Also the Tikka has two bolt lugs while the Browning has three.  The Browning has a steel clip while the Tikka has a Poly-plastic clip.

To Tikkas...
The Tikka has a slight advantage toward accuracy.  The Tikka trigger would be better (no roll pins and better adjustments).  Barrels on the Tikka are Sako.   To me the feel is slightly better.  Tikkas are cheaper priced.

After owning both I feel the Tikka is the best deal but I do love my Brownings.

I took my savage to a gunsmith a while back and was told there wasn't to much he could do on the savage.  I believe he took some creep out of the trigger and that made a little bit of a difference.

I have considered replacing the trigger with an aftermarket one from "Rifle Basix".

Savage Trigger Rework
« Reply #6 on: November 02, 2004, 05:35:50 AM »
Johnboy,
Very interesting. I have a Savage 116 stainless in 300 RUM. My gunsmith removed the creep and reduced the trigger pull to about 3.5 lbs. The 116 is only about 5 years old, maybe the time period of manufacture, is the difference.

The trigger is the reason I don't buy Ruger or Savage.  However, I might now that Savage is trying.  Still a Tikka trigger can be adjusted lower than a Savage with the Accutrigger.   I hunt with a very light trigger.  For me the 1 to 1.5 pounds is just right but I do not suggest that everyone.

Howa vs Tikka
« Reply #10 on: November 24, 2004, 09:13:56 PM »
I'm looking for .243 for my daughter, I own a Howa 1500 in .223 and it shoots great, was considering getting either another Howa or a Tikka, price difference is about $175 more for the Tikka and serious questions about a recall. Any input?

I have a Tikka and a Howa.  The major rub against the Tikka is the plastic parts, like the trigger guard and the bolt shroud.  I have broken the shroud on mine, on the first trip out.  Beretta sent me a replacement for free, so they are standing behind it.

Other then that, the TIkka is a slightly more refined rifle, but the Howa is a great bargain, and I'll buy more.  PRobably of both...

Tom

Do a search on the Tikka recall.  You will find pertinent info there.  I have a Tikka Whitetail Hunter in 243.  Absolutely love that rifle.  I have not had any experience with the new T-3.

I was considering a Tikka until the recent Sako barrel blow-up incidents. I would wait and see. Sako/Stoeger distributer in Canada provided poor service to me to date.

My three Brownings are working Okay.

A rifle is something you keep for a little while so a few extra bucks should not be a show stopper. Look for something you like and be happy with it.
