Legend of 'Hogzilla' Grows in Georgia

Wednesday, July 28, 2004

ALAPAHA, Ga.  — Around these parts, they are calling it Hogzilla (search): a 12-foot-long wild hog recently killed on a plantation and now quickly becoming a part of local legend.

The plantation's owner claims the hog weighed 1,000 pounds and had 9-inch tusks. But few people have actually seen the hog — the only proof being a photo that shows the dead beast hanging from a rope.

Whether the hog ever actually existed or is some sort of Faulknerian myth, it has definitely been the topic of conversation in small towns across southern Georgia (search).

"People just back up and ask 'Is it real?' They can't believe that there's a hog that big in the woods," said Drew White, who has a copy of the photo on display at an auto parts store in Tifton, about 17 miles away.

Chris Griffin said he killed the beast last month at the River Oak Plantation , where he is a hunting guide, and has been showing off the picture around this small farming community ever since. The hog is nearly twice as long as the 6-foot-tall Griffin, who is seen standing next to it in the photo.

Can't say if this picture is authentic although it does look real but I can say that pigs do get this big.  I've seen one at the Iowa State Fair.  They have a big pig contest every year and the winner when I was there one time weighed 1100 pounds and I saw and put my hand on his back.  He was like a short-legged, fully grown steer.  Looks like his nuggets go 20 pounds apiece.

The fellow in the picture is reaching forward from a position some 2+ feet behind the hog (if the photo is in fact unretouched). Plus the man's right foot is hidden behind the soil bank, which creates an optical illusion that the hog is much longer than he really is. If the man and hog are actually together in the photo, careful examination (measurement and ratios) makes the hog more like 8 feet long stretched out, which would correspond to about a 500-lb hog or so. Still a big fella, but not of the legendary size the story indicates.
There is no more humbling experience for man than to be fully immersed in nature's artistry.

FWIW, this event was discussed on several boards earlier this summer, and the general concensus was that it was a fake because of the land owner's actions immediately after the kill and suspicious details of the photo. He buried it promptly and wanted no claim to fame!

Like Loader3009 says, you can research Hogzilla on the net.  I guess Nat'l Geographic has already dug up the remains and will report on the findings on their tv show in early 2005.  Early rumors has it the hog really is close to 12 feet when stretched out.
I plan on hog hunting in north central Florida in the Ocla Nat'l forest in December; sure am glad I just bought an 06.  Whether it is 10' or 12'.....what'a hog!

That would be interesting if it turns out to be true.... FWIW, National Geographics has no info on it on their web site, and I've not seen anything in their magazine.  :?

According to the ruler I used, and my calculations, if Mr. Griffin is 6 ft. the hog is 10 ft from tip of snout to tip of toes. I allowed a little extra for Griffin's heighth, because he is standing in a hole. The hog is roughly 1 2/3 the length of Giffin's heighth. To me, that says either the hog is 10 ft long, or Griffin is 7 ft tall. Either way, I'm willing to agree with calling it Hogzilla. Sure is a lot of center cut chops and home made soap on the critter!! cowpox

Folk - the local paper today ran a picture of a prize winning 1,600 pound hog at some fair.  The article said the hog was 7.5 feet long and 4.5 feet high.  So, if you hang something like that up by it's hind legs it will look longer than normal, but not 12'.  I wouldn't think, anyhow.  2 cents worth.  Mikey.
