20 GA Encore Slug Barrel
« on: November 01, 2004, 03:00:07 PM »
I took my 20 GA Encore Slug barrel to the range to day again. The barrel has a Nikon 2-7X32 Shotgun scope on it. I am shooting Federal 20 GA 3in. 5/8 oz. Hydra-shok HP Magnum slug throw it, and getting a 2 in. group at 100 yards with it. It`s one hell of a shooter. The only thing is for 5 shots, it is $13. Down the drain.  I try 2 3/4in. slug in it, and had a 8in. group at 100 yards. That stinks. I will stay with the 3in. I don`t the price, but the group is priceless.

20 gauge slug barrel

I have not yet bought a slug barrel for my Encore but when I do it will be a 20 inch rifled barrel. Besides weight and recoil what is the advantage of the 2o over the 12 gauge. Never owned a 20 and know nothing about ammo availability and diversity. Thanks

Whodaheck99, try the 20 ga. Remington copper solids. They have shot extremely well in 3 different rifled shotguns I have. My son shoots them in his Remington 870 slug gun and we get 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups at 100 yards. We only shoot the 2 3/4 inch ones at $9.50 to 10.50 a box. I would not shot any other. Remington solid copper slug works awesome on deer.  :D

I know of a nice 8 point that can attest to the accuracy and knock down of the Encore with a 20ga slug barrel. Used a 3" Federal with the Barnes 3/4 oz slug. Groups about 5/8" at 50 yds. Sighted in at 2" high at 50yds they hit right on to 1/2" high at 100 yds and about 3" low at 125.  The 5/8oz might have even better ballistics, but weren't as available in my area just before the season.

I have try Remington Copper Solids, Lightfield, and Winchester. I think I will stay with the 3" Federal 5/8 oz.  Hydra-shok Sabot. Some rifle don`t group that good.

Tried all sorts of slugs in my 20 and found the Federals with Barnes Expanders most accurate with Winchester partitions second. Killed 6 Pt at 60 yds last year right tight to shoulder and he went down as fast as any 12 I have shot. I agree on cost though and wish I could find reloading components similar to the 12 ga. Hammerheads I get from Rich Knoster at www.shotgunslugs.com He doesn't have 20 ga Hammerheads but if he did I would go with them in heartbeat since the 12 ga shoots one hole groups at 50 and legitimate 2" groups at 100 out of my Hastings heavy barrel on my 870. I haven't tried the .45 cal. collets from ballistic Products yet but look interesting since Hornady .45 250 gr XTP is suppose to work in them. Could be interesting to develop when I get some time.
