Need advice on new woods gun
« on: November 11, 2004, 05:02:19 AM »
I am torn between 2 guns to be used for deer hunting in the Mississippi River bottoms.  I like the Ruger 77/44 SS and I like the Remington 7600 carbine in 30-06.  Both are similarly priced.  I know the 30-06 has greater range, but i already have a 7mm-08 and a .270.  I really will only be making shots to about 100yds. and will be using a fixed 4x scope.  Which of these 2 guns has better accuracy?  Anyone have any experience with either?
thanks.

Unless you just want a new rifle, (I can't imagine why) :-D You already have one of the best rifles around for any type terrian. I'm talking about the 7mm/08.

i'm looking for a short carbine type gun that i can walk the woods with easily and my 7mm-08 does not fit the bill.  that's why i want one of the 2 above mentioned guns.

rusty75, you might be posting in the wrong place. The best 100 yard woods guns are short, light, fast handling, rapid firing, and NOT bolt guns. If you have your heart set on a .44 you need a lever action , or a semi-auto. The 30-06 is way overpowered for what you are talking about. A good rifled barrelled shotgun is pretty hard to beat under 100 yards. Which gun is more accurate means nothing, unless you want to pick off a squirrel or two.

The model 94 Winchester in .30-30 was my choice for a bush gun this year, and it has dumped 2 deer already. The .30-06 is way too much for close in work. IMHO

I know this is not one of the choices that you listed but have you considered the Marlin Guide Gun with its 18 1/2 " ported barrel. This gun would work well with a ghost ring site or a low powered scope. Also the Marlin 336 in 35 Rem, this caliber is alot better than its numbers suggest. Both are awesome deer and hog guns at short to medium range. As far as your choices listed, its whatever you like, both guns and calibers will get the job done at the distance of 100 yds. I don't know about the accuracy of the 77/44, but I can tell you that the Rem. Model 760 is a very accurate pump gun. I've shot 2, and they both would shoot MOA with 3 shots. I would think that the 7600 would be similar, but don't know for sure.

Ditto what Coal River Rat said(I'm from WV too originally).  In any event, I have a Rem M760 that will shoot 3/4" or better with handloads when I do my part.  If you handload, you can load 30-06 rounds to 308, 300 Sav., or even 30-30 velocities and will kill any deer on the planet.  I load my to about 308 velocities and the deer don't seem to mind.

I would suggest a lever gun in 35 Remington. Shooting 200grain soft points, good at 30 yards or 125 yards. Kills them quick, and not much recoil either.
