Wally World Savage
« on: October 29, 2004, 12:48:56 PM »
Took the savage 110 that I bought from Wally World out for it's first test firing.  It's a Savage 110FPX, .270, black synthetic stock with 3X9 Simmons scope.

I left the gun as it was straight out of the box.  The only thing I did before firing it was to wipe the outside down with an oily rag, and run 2 dry patches through the bore.  I was tempted to adjust the "lawyer" trigger, but wanted to see what it would do right out of the box.

Started at 30 yards, fired a shot and adjusted the scope....out of the box, 6 inches right and 3 inches low.  It took three rounds to have the scope where I wanted it at 30 yards.  Trigger pull sucked.  I'm not sure how heavy the trigger is, but a squeeze wouldn't do it, and it felt like I had to jerk it.

Fired 3 rounds five minutes apart, Winchester silvertip 130 grain , for a 2" group but with 2 holes side by side.  Fired 3 more the same way, 3/4" group.  Then another 3 round group that measured 5/8".

I then switched to 150gn remington corelots.  Same point of impact, and less than an inch.

This with standard factory non premium ammo......I think it did pretty darn good.

The gun felt good to me, didn't really notice any recoil, and I'm happy with it.  I've spent way more and gotten less.  NOW, REMINGTON, RUGER, and WINCHESTER, TAKE NOTE.....YOU BETTER STEP IT UP A NOTCH, BECAUSE AT TWICE TO THREE TIMES THE COST, YOU HAD BETTER MAKE
EM SHOOT 1/2".

V.C. I hate to pop your little bubble, but your 30 yard 5/8" group translates into over 2 inches at 100 yards. And, regardless of what you hear from the the other cheap gun shooters, real rifles are tested with 5 shot groups. And, those "REMINGTON, RUGER, and WINCHESTER" guns you think you are picking on are easy to sell, just try and see what you can get for that Savage if you need to get rid of it tomorrow.

Ramrod,

I like Ruger's and Winchester's.  You can't run fast enough to give me a new Remington but you are going to be hard pressed to get any of the nre Ruger, Winchester or Remington's to be as accurate, "out of the box" as the new Savage's are proving to be.  And why would anyone want to get rid of an accurate rifle.  The only reason to get rid of a rifle is if it won't shoot.  Lawdog

Well, some folks think it's important not to be seen with an ugly gun, truck, woman, ect. They all do the job, but a little class goes a long way.

I think you misunderstood.  I started at 30 yards to get on target.  The target was then moved to 100 yards.  My mistake.  Fact is the savage shoots under 1 inch at 100 yards.  As for ugly, one of the other great shooters I've had was a remington 788, and compared to the 788, the savage is a beauty queen.

I have several other brands of rifles, and love my rugers.  That being said, I've always had to work to get them to shoot as well as the savage does out of the box.  As for selling a savage, I wouldn't expect to get a lot for it because I have very little in it.

I in no way am running down Remington, Ruger, or Winchester, but am trying to encourage them to make sure we get the quality we are paying for and hoping they will live up to the reputation that got them where the are.   My marlin 1895 45.70 lever gun shoots just over an inch at 100 yards, and we should all expect that any rifle should do the same "out of the box".

Are you saying ugly women have no class, or that men that have ugly women have no class?

Glad to see a report on that rifle. Had let the Wally .270 vangard @ $250 go by as I prefered something smaller but the Savage is still there for $244.
Good article on the .270 by J Carmichel in Nov Outdoor life.

Second statement first> No, I was joking, I said some folks believe that, not all.
As for the first, why should we expect 1" groups out of the box for all rifles. And once again, I'm talking 5 shots. If your gun puts three shots in the same hole and the next two 3 inches to the left, you do not have an accurate rifle. I would be very disappointed with more than 1/2 inch groups in my varmint rifle, but 1-1/2 or even 2 inches is perfectly OK in a big game gun. I would rather pony up the bucks for some nice wood, good polish, maybe a little engraving, here goes that class thing again, sorry.

Expounding a bit on what Swampman said.  It is important that YOU know where the first shot goes.  As far as pretty rifles, I have seen hunters not go through the brush for fear of scratching them.  Snazy pick-ups?  High payments, high insurance, and drive it down the logging trail?  are you kidding I just spent a couple hrs waxing.  (Maybe should of been practicing shooting)  Beautiful women?  Known a few.  They usually aren't nice.  Don't have to be, they have "options".  A little trashy goes a long way towards.......fun!  If it is important to you to be surrounded by only the beautiful, is is probably a self esteem thing.  E-gads!  What happens if you have an ugly kid?  I digress......victorcharlie - enjoy the Savage,  sounds like a real performer...................which leads me back to a little trashy...................

I just came back from a 5 day elk hunt in NM.  Huntin bubby had his $50K new truck and was afraid to take it in a lot of places.

I never worried once about my "ugly" Savage '06, no matter where I took it.

Swampman,
What kind of tinkering did you do to your Ruger 77 to make it shoot better?

I built a nice custom mauser 270 that is finely accurate and pretty nice to look at along with rugged. My hunting buddy bought a rifle just like yours for $300 and it is lighter than my rifle and almost as accurate (I shoot reloads) it will do anything mine will do. But it ain't purty!

I was thinking hunt this gun when the weather isn't nice, hunt the pretty stuff when I don't have to worry about messing it up!

Congrats on your rifle.  Accuracy and dependability are the absolute main factors for me in a rifle.  I might pay extra for a nice stock or better finish, etc, but I wouldn't sacrifice ANY bit of accuracy for cosmetic features.
