Savage 110 feed problems
« on: November 30, 2004, 04:53:03 PM »
I have a savage 110 and often when trying to chamber a round the bolt will skip over the bullet in the magazine.  It usually isn't a big problem but it kept me from getting a second shot on a deer last week.  Has anyone had similar problems, or know what I can do to fix it.

It sounds like either the magazine follower is hanging up a bit or is installed backwards, the mag spring is weak, or the feed lips need to be opened up just a bit.
Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

I had a feed problem on a short action Savage but it turned out to be due to a particular lot of factory ammo. When I tried a different box of ammo from a new lot, problem solved. Have not had the problem since.

I'd try a different lot of ammo -- that's the simplest approach.  Then I'd try looking at the magazine -- disassemble it and check the follower, spring, and internal finish (looking for something that could hang the follower up.)  After cleaming and reassembling, I'd try again -- if you still have problems, and you know the magazine is properly reassembled and  clean, try another magazine.

My Savage 110FP won't feed the last round from the magazine.   I haven't really tried to fix it since its a varmint gun and it's no big deal.

Jboy,

One other I remembered, and is a simple thing that you might try. Load the magazine with the cartridges located in different positions. i.e. try loading with rounds slid all the way back in the mag, all the way forward, and midway when they are in the mag. When I was at the range, I remember getting an occasional feeding problem with the bolt not wanting to pick up the cartridge as well and it turned out to be when the cartridges were too far forward (they are in the mag but the tips are almost touching the front face of the mag). When I moved the cartridges back, the feeding problem was solved. Experiment with different arrangements and I suspect you might have the same experience I did.
