300 whisper question
« on: October 28, 2004, 03:07:19 PM »
I bought a 15" barrel TC contender in 300 Whisper.  A friend had a CZ in 7.62x39 rebarrelled in Whisper.  At the same time the Army was trying the cartridge in the M-16.  To date the Army abandoned the project.  I have not gotten a load to be happy with.  My friend had the chamber opened up on the CZ to accept the 30 remington and loaded a 125 gr bullet.  The neck of the case was shortened a little over an 1/8 of an inch.  It looks like a long 300 Whisper.  They finally shot a group at 35 yds that was acceptable.  Will shoot 100yds and chronograph this weekend.  They think it approaches the 30-30.

My barrell was a 15"arrel.  I finally put a brake on it which made it longer than 16".  I then put a stock on it to make a carbine.  Nice small rifle; however, nothing to brag about in performance.

Any better success with the whisper.  I limit it to 50 to 75 yds.  It is neither pistol or rifle cartridge.  The shop I go to is not impressed with JD Jones claims about the Whisper.  I might consider having my chamber chaged to the 30 Remington like my friend if I cannot get better results.

300 whisper question

If that brake wasn't welded on then you have an illegal rifle - stay away from public places like shooting ranges.  Regardless of what your ill-informed gunshop monkey thinks, the .300 Whisper has an envied reputation as a medium game cartridge - with the right bullets of course.

What are the problems with the loads you are trying?  Limiting the rifle to game under 76# means using the 125 Nosler is a no-brainer.  How did that bullet shoot for you?  I have had excellent results with that bullet and both H110 and IMR4227 powders in my 10" factory barrel.  It is common to see comments from .300 owners reporting sub-moa groups, there is nothing wrong with the cartridge.
