Leaving Alaska too.....
« on: November 09, 2004, 08:16:47 PM »
fill five deer tags back in New York for two weeks.  Seems that we don't have enough hunters back there so I have to return to help keep the population down.

The favorite son has a six pointer in the freezer already.  He had a 11+ pointer come within 35 yards not offering a shot tonight.  I told him I would help him with that problem next week.

One week of bow hunting and one week of shotgun!

You guys behave and don't let the anit's pull any quick ones while I am gone.

Aw rats, you're coming back!

Good luck down there.  We expect a full report when you get back.  Graybeard needs a "Hunting in New York" forum it looks like!

Back.......I hate flying and it took me 10 hours to drive home from Anchorage because of the roads and snow.

The deer were a little hard to pattern but I did take a 145lb. dressed doe on the first Thursday.  Easy 32 yard shot, double lunger and a nice clean kill. The Stinger broadhead did an excellent job and I got a complete pass-through.

The opening of gun season and I had a 8 point walk up and stand broadside of my treestand at 9 yards.  Put a slug in the carberator and he ran 72 yards before heading down hill and head first into a 18" maple tree.  He left scars on the tree and also the rack was broken off.  I think he had a 24" spread?

Then a 4 point walked up the same trail 2 hours into the season and I passed at 15 yards as I did not want to fill my sons tag for him.

Latter that day I had a doe (and 2 doe tags), walk up within 12 yards.  I will certainly remember to shuck the empty shell out to the 12 gauge pump next time.  Doe's don't respond to large metalic slicking sounds.

After that the deer were pretty elusive and we did not connect on any others. Great trip to spend time with the son and the grandkids though.

I have been up since 3 a.m. on Sat and it is now 5:24 p.m. Sunday.  I am about ready to crash.  No pictures. And I hope to someday recover my camera from where ever that is.
