Watched a Grizzly Kill a Baby Moose

Went fishing for Kings this afternoon with my neighbor. We drove to the Chena Dam and put the boat in. About two miles as the crow flies from my house. We went down river about two miles and anchored in a big hole. We'd been sitting there for about 45 minutes when a cow moose came running out of the willows. There was a baby right behind her. The cow ran stright into the river and started across, the baby hesitated at the waters edge. A small Grizzly came out of the brush grabbed the baby moose by the neck, gave it two hard shakes. The baby went limp, it was dead, broken neck. The cow turned back and charged the bear. The bear started running down the bank. Since they were coming in our direction, and the river was only about knee to waist deep, I cut the anchor line, while Norm was trying to start the boat. We went down river quick.

After we went around the first bend Norm turned around and eased back to where we could see. The cow was standing over the baby, while the bear sat staring at her. After about 10 minutes the bear charged the cow and she ran back into the river. The bear grabbed the baby and drug it into the brush, out of sight. The cow paced up and down the bank for about an hour then crossed the river and left. We came back up the river full speed, went straight to the landing and went home. We'll go back tomorrow for the anchor, maybe. Did not catch any Kings. This was not the same Grizzly I saw in my back yard.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Thanks Sourdough,

That would be awesome to see for sure.  Never seen a bear in the wild, much less a griz.  We MIGHT have a blackie or two in far eastern Oklahoma.

well VTDW, it's an experiance that is not soon forgotten. all my encounters have been with black bears, but even then they can seem mighty intimidating when your setting around the fire at night, look over your shoulder and theres one sitting less then 12 feet away just stareing at ya. that happened oon the thanksgiving weekend in october almost 2 years ago. it had ransacked my camper and emptied my cooler. and came back for more. park ranger said it was a problem baear that they had tried to relocate and came back. since the campground was mostly empty he gave us the go ahead to shoot it if it came back and the next night it died of acute indigestion. to much lead on a full stomach. a .303 ectomy so to speak. actually i had mixed feeling over the whole affair. true it was a problem bear and a potential danger, but we where the ones trespassing in his backyard.

Yow! That's one clip that ain't gonna make it to the Disney Channel.   Videotaper's political comment on the third segment says it all.

Funny how I used to think from all those nature shows I used to watch on TV as a kid that predators would always instantly and painlessly dispatch prey right at the point of pounce. It wasn't until I started getting into the outdoors myself that I realized that nature wasn't so clean.

Hats off to the videographer for that remarkable footage.
