scope advice?
« on: October 23, 2004, 01:31:41 PM »
having problems keeping a scope intact on my encore.i've got a vv custom 50 alaskan barrel on it 21" ported.had an older redfeild on it during load developement that didn,t seem to stay zeroed so i thought ok to much recoil,so then i picked up a bushnell shotgun scope in realtree camo looked great on the stainless gun/realtree stocks. sighted right in was working fine until today.it's the first day of rifle season here in ny ,was out in the woods on watch went to adjust the variable on the scope and the hole damn crosshair configuration turned with it.i don't know if bushnell will take it back but i need some suggestions on what scope to buy.i'm thinking a 2-7 burris compact.any help appreciated.thanks shawn

I would check out the Leupold VXII or VX III models, in what ever power range you choose. Some people believe that the fixed power scopes are tougher and take recoil better, can't really say if that is the case or not, but on my "go to" deer rifle I have a Leupold 6x42mm, it is one of my favorite scopes for various reasons. Leupold has a "no hassle" lifetime warrenty even if you are not the original owner, and their turnaround time and service is 1st rate if you would need to use the warranty. Alot of good scopes out there, but I believe in optics more than anything there are no free rides, most of the time pay for what you get. Also, Leupold has good(long) eye relief which is a major plus on a hard kicking gun. The compact scopes that I've looked through seem to have short and critical eye relief and the weight savings is next to none. If I wanted a small and light scope I would probably go with a fixed 4x with a 36 or 32mm objective. Just my 2 cents. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I bought my first rifle scope in about 1960, plus or minus a year, and have had a pile of them over the years. At present I probably have at least 35 scopes laying around here. I have several different brands, but on all my guns I have Leupolds, the rest are for sale. I have some where over 20 Leupolds, got my first one in the 1960`s and still have it, even after it went through a car wreck and was on a gun that was destroyed in the wreck. It`s not to pretty as it has a lot of gouges in it, but is works as good as it did the day it was new. Acouple of years ago I bought 2 Burrius handgun scopes, a 3 x 9 and a 1 x 4. I put the 3 x 9 on a .357 max., 15 in. Bullberry barrel. At 75 yrds. on 9x I was shooting 3 1/2 to 4 in. groups. I was not happy with the groups, but deer season was about to open. Fugering on carring it on 3x I set it there to check it. My groups dropped to about 1in. and were at least 6 in. form the point of impack of those fired on 9x. I sold that Burrius to a guy that was going to send it back to Burrius for repair and bought a Leupold for the gun. Ther are better scopes than Leupold, but I can`t afford them, and I won`t use anything less. I hear their service is good on repair, but useing and abuseing their scope for about 40 years now I`ve never had cause to send one back to them.

originally i was going to buy a compact burris but i think i'm leaning toward the 2-7 compact leupold.i wanted one in realtree to mach my rifle but i think i;ll have to settle for silver.leupold should do a realtree sereis of scopes.the silver should look ok with my stainless frame and barrel.i want a small scope this encore has a 21" barrel trying to keep it light and compact.nikon makes a realtree finish but it's in there prostaff series i don't think it would handle the recoil.the leupold is cheaper than the bushnell 4200,and you've got that no hassle lifetime garantee.

the scope was a bushnell trophy.its intended use was for shotgun so i assumed it would handle the 50 alaskan recoil-wrong answer.to much gun not enough scope.the bushnell was realtree finish and i really like the way it looked on that rifle.i decided to go with a nikon 2x7 x 32 in realtree.i have a few nikon scopes and have had good luck with them.besides i'm kinda cheap.saved 120$ or so over the leupold and nikon has a lifetime guarantee as well.if i can get my wife to help i'll take a pic of my encore and post it.it's a sweet little rig.i'm shooting 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yds using 525 grain CAST bullets.i,m pretty happy with that considering the recoil it delivers.

I would recommend a Leupold 1.5-5x20 VXIII.  It is about the perfect scope for a heavy encore barrel.  I had one on a 45/70 barrel and it was great.  I recently replaced it with a williams peep site.  You can't go wrong with the leupolds.
