Rem 7600 in carbine or rifle?
« on: October 25, 2004, 01:45:12 PM »
Am going to get a rem 7600 in 30-06, but not sure if I want rifle or carbine.  That is 22" barrel vs. 18.5".

I know the carbine will handle faster, but how will it affect the long shots, velocity?  It'll be for deer/bear/elk out to 300yds, but where we hunted elk last week I could have used a bow if they would sit still. (They didn't  )

Thoughts, experiences?  Will the 18.5" barrel cost me enough loss of energy/velocity to cut me back to 250 or 200yds for an elk?

I have the old 760 carbine which is perfect for short range snap shooting & still hunting in deep woods.  If I wanted a 300 yard shooter, I would use my bolt action. I beieve the quick handling of the pump lends itself more to rapid fire short range situations not long range spot & stalk type hunting where you would typically have a long time to aim with a steady rest. Just my opiion since you asked.

IMHO you'd be happier with the rifle.

Dave, thanks.

I agree on the carbine, but have read GLOWING accounts of the accuracy of these rifles, so I see no reason to need a bolt gun.  Hunting out west here, you can walk from an area of 40-50yd shots and in a few minutes be looking down 300yds of hillside.

I'm selling a bolt gun to get this one since I do not like the sluggish reload sequence of a bolt gun.  The 7600 has a free floated barrel that is screwed into the receiver just like its bolt brothers so it can be very accurate.  The fast follow-up shot is a bonus.  I do not like having the bolt that gets in the way of brush and clothing.

I would go with the rifle also, the 30-06 would do the job but why not look at the 35 Whelen, a little more power, bigger bullets. MIKE.

I have rifles and carbines both. My carbines are a 760 in 308 Win and a 7600 in 35 Rem. My rifles are in 300 Savage, 35 Whelen, and 257 Roberts. They both shoot great. Of the whole bunch, I am very partial to my 35 Rem. As I have said in other posts, this rifle is flat out awesome!! I prefer the carbine because they are easy to carry, especially when you are on the move alot (deer drives). I also feel that as far as I am going to shoot, the carbines are plenty. If you wonder if the carbines work, check out the Benoit's. There carbines have killed alot of deer.
As far as the 35 Whelen goes, check out gunbroker, auction arms, or guns america amd you will be able to find a bunch of them.
Expect it when you least expect it

I just cut my 7600 in .280 down to Carbine length. Shorter barrel = stiffer barrel = more accurate (in theory). Did my accuracy improve? I would say yes, slightly. During our annual Field Day I consistently scored high on the running deer event (winning one of the four rounds). After cleaning up, my friends and I goofed around, shooting 6 - 8" diameter pumpkins at the 200 yard range (our furthest). FWIW I was the only one consistently hitting them; I wouldn’t hesitate reaching out to 300 yards if the opportunity presented itself...
