What is it?
« on: October 13, 2004, 12:07:54 PM »
A friend of mine gave me a rifle to identify the cal.  The foundation is a MDL 1917 Eddystone.  He thought it to be 7MM, but slugging the barrel determined that it is still in 30 cal.   I am able to chamber a FL resized 7MM Rem mag but not a FL resized 308 Norma.  I made a chamber cast and the shoulder appears to be about .08 shorter than the Norma.  It appears to have aprx a 25 degree shoulder.  I cannot find any reference to any other 30 Mags. in my material.  My inclination is believe is is simply a short chambered 308 Norma.

From your description, it may be chambered for the wildcat .30-.338 Win. This cartridge has seen considerable use with 100 yard shooters. If I remember correctly, the .308 norma is approximately 0.030" longer at the shoulder, which may explain why the .308 norma case will not chamber while the 7 mm Rem case will.

Ooops!
I meant to say the 30-338 was used by 1000 yard shooters, not only 100 yarders.

Checking the chamber cast against a 338 case it would appear that you are probably correct.  Thank you sir.

sgtt,

Added note on the .30-338.  This was the cartridge that the sporting world believed that Winchester would adopt and call the .300 Winchester Magnum.  Winchester crossed everyone up by bringing out the current .300 Winchester Magnum.  I believe the same thing that is why I have a .30-338 now.  Lawdog
