The day dawned overcast & wet here in south western CT so I set out to spend the morning in my ground blind. Sat till around 10 without seeing any deer, although that they were around was obvious by the abundant sign.
Anyhow I'm going to upstate NY for opening day on Monday & leaving tommorow I had some stuff to do & couldnt sit all day.
I got back in around 1:00 & figured I'd sit till dark if it doesnt really start pouring.
Saw a few deer as the afternoon wore on but they didnt come into bow range. I mighta let them go anyway as I kinda want a buck & the ruts in full swing here.
Round about 3:30 or 3:45 I look up to see a deer lookng at my blind from maybe 30 feet away. Slowly I move out of the window & pick up my bow & then look to see if he's stll staring or not & he's gone  He's mostly hidden by some ledge & when he goes down to feed I lost him but in a sec his head pops back into view as he takes a look around. Turns out he's much more worried about his back trail than my blind so I relax a bit & wait for him to take a step or two from behind the rocks. Not a monster buck to be sure but a nice 6 point that I think would help fill the freezer if you understand. Well he really likes it behind that piece of ledge & for 1/2 hour or so thats where he stayed, cept for once when the squirrels spooked & he started to split but thought better of it & came back.
Once he settled down again he's in a little better spot for me, I can see his body from head (when its up) to a couple inches behind his shoulder but only the top 6" or so & I'm still not willing to shoot thet tight to the rocks & risk missing or even worse wounding him so I figure I'll just wait till he steps out. Well lights fading fast so I turn on my cell phone to check the time & in my slightly frantic state ferget to turn it off.
10 more minutes & he's almost out, just anuther half a step.
Then of all the doggone things that could happen the damn phone starts ringing! Fast as I can I reach down & turn it off. When I look back up I expect to see a raised white tail bounding into the woods but to my supprise he just kinda walks off never even looking in my direction.
I guess he heard it but wasn't sure what he heard & followed hs instincts to leave even tho he wasn't sure he should be scared. Took him anuther half hour to leave the area so maybe there will be a second chapter.
Recon after I get back from NY I'll leave the blind alone for a bit & take to the trees. I like the blind tho, nuthin like being able to fall asleep without worrying about taking a fall.
Later & good hunting fellas!
