I've got a chance to trade a Colt Coltsman rifle for a BARin 7 mag. made in Belg. or one in 30 06 ass. in Portugal. Is there any differance in the guns quality? What about accurcy?   Digger

Can't speak for the pure Belg. made BAR's.  Mine is one of the Belg/Portugal made in 30-06 flavor.  Fit and finish is just beautiful and this gun can shoot as well.  With 180gr Sierra GK's on top of 57.2gr of IMR-4831 she is averaging .58"CTC @ 100 Yds.

Firstshot does your's have the boss ? The 30 06 one does not have the boss.  If it shoots like your's I'd be very happy shooter.  Digger

Ditchdigger NO...mine doe NOT have the BOSS system, and yep, I'm just a little bit tickled with the way she's shoting......cause everyone knows semi-autos aren't as accurate as bolts.....LOL.

What are you going to be hunting and at what distances?  I would let those factors help with the caliber decision.   I just recently got my BAR and chose the 30-06.  It's exteremly versitle, point blank range(+-3") is about 280 Yds, it can take anything in North America, you can get ammo literally anywhere, and it is absolutely a hand loaders dream.

To top all that off, 30-06 felt recoil in the BAR is negligible!   It's really a pleasure to shoot.  My last trip to the range, I shot 23 three shot groups.  No sweat.  Don't know how well someone would fair shooting a 7Mag that many times in one sitting.

But don't let me influence you, because, it it's not already obvious, I'm totally biased favoring the 30-06....

I hunt clearcuts mostly, and usually have my 300 Wby.for the out to 450 yds. I was looking for something between my 30 06 (.310 at 100) and the 300 (.650 at 100)  The Belgum is in 7Mag with a 24" barrel and a lighter color stock with straight grain, and the Portugal has pretty nice wood on it. DitchDigger: What a dilema you have for sure!...A nice one tho

I have a Belgium - Assm'ld in Porugal .300 Win Mag  , what a nice shooting rifle! I've only had it a short while , always been  a bolt action fella'.
I do love the way it handles and smooth shooting is a trademark of them.
I am actually thinking of taking it moose hunting this fall here in Ontario , Canada.

All I can say to you about your choice is to take the one you like the "feel" of the best...the're both good calibers , the 7 mag is a little longer and heavier perhaps , but will do anything you ask of it hunting wise.
You say you have a bolt 30-06 now?  Well at least you don't have to stock new ammo for the '06 BAR...I love the .30-06 cal , but I think I will lean towards the 7mm , only because you haven't had one and those who shoot them - absolutely rave about them.

So there you go , keep us posted okay?

Regards ,
Bob

I bought the 7 mag. and I'm extremly happy with it. The recoil is pratically nonexitant. It shoots the 140 gr. corlokt's 3229 fps.avg. and about 1.25" at 100 yds. I shot a 300 pd. boar the other night, the boar was facing me and quartering away so I put it inbetween the shoulders. Like a typical boar he took off like nothing had happened,so I let him run until he reached a spot that I could load him in the truck, and let him have it through the shoulders. The shot through the shoulders did not exit but dropped him on the spot. The best thing about all of this is that I could have put all 4 rds. through him before he went 30 ft. I'm going to start some serious reloading when I get caught up with my work, and see if this baby will shoot some serious groups.  Digger
