First time lake trout fishing

Im heading out to try some lake trout fishing ( got cheap access to a cabin in the area of a good laker spot). I have not done this before and I was was looking for pointers. I know at this time of year they are deep, but down riggers are out. Is there other ways to get down.

Any help would be great.
