To all the guys who helped with thier great ideas on helping me put together my first "homebuilt" gun, thanks a ton. I took it to the range today and it is a dream to shoot.
Accuracy was a problem only because the Weaver scope bases were drilled improperly but I remedied that by installing a Redfield base and rings. The adjustable windage feature should be very helpful as the rear weaver base was a bit crooked, making it impossible to correct windage. The Redfield has a rear windage adjustment which should correct that problem.
The gun is a Mauser 98 action fitted with an E R Shaw #3 contour barrel
25 inches with a 1-9" twist. Shooting this gun is so fine because the recoil is totally manageable. The next trip to the range shpuld prove to be one where I find the accuracy of the rifle.
Thanks again for all the great advice guys and good shooting!
