WIN USA 45JHP
« on: September 08, 2004, 03:42:35 AM »
I bought my first box of the 45 grain HP that everyone is having good luck with (for the 223).  15 of the 40 rounds have a hexagonal crimp at the case mouth.  The others have a smooth case mouth.  The white box 55 gr FMJ rounds all have the hex crimp on them.  I guess that I have two questions:  What is the hex crimp and can I expect consistency between types?
After firing, some of the hex crimped ones show split case mouths.  Granted I did not examine any of the cartridges before firing.  I didn't notice any of this until I was packing up.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like you have some defective ammo.  I've never seen that type of crimp on any of my white box ammo.  I'd call Win before I shot any more.  They'll probably relplace it for you.

Sounds to me like a defective crimper at the factory, unless someelse has heard of it before, I never have.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

I emailed Winchester (couldn't find a phone # on their website) and got a reply within 2 hours saying that "Product Services will contact you via the US postal service".  I am not sure what that means but I am starting to think that I have bad ammo from two different lots.  Think that I will go take a look at some other boxes at Wal Mart and see what they look like.
