Today I stumbled across an old Remington 40-X single shot in .30-06 at one of my favorite gunstores. It has a beautiful walnut stock (polished wood with swirls) with very few dings. The metal is near perfect and the action screws look virgin. The barrel is 26 inches screwed into a short action ( yep, a short action) with no copper fouling. The trigger feels about two ounces with no factory safety installed. I asked the proprietor if he knew the history of the rifle. His reply was the standard: "The original owner died and his wife brought a bunch of his guns in to sell." I bought it for 1/2 the price of a new 40-X. This thing is gorgeous, large, and very heavy. I mounted the only spare scope I have at the moment, a Redfield 10x Target model.
If this rifle is as accurate as it looks it will fall into that unique category of "The Find of the Decade." I hope so, because that's the main line I used on my wife, as she was with me when I stumbled across it.
