I have a Savage 110 LH 30-06 (long action) that had a mediocre 4X scope on it. I wanted to upgrade so I bought a Simmons Aetec 2.8X10X44. Love the scope so far but when I went to mount it on the Savage I noticed a problem. The Weaver style 2 piece bases that were on it were too far apart to fit the Simmons.
Second the rings were too low to clear the barrel.
So I went to the local gun shop, bought the Luepold 1 piece base and dovetail rings ($50 for the pair). Very nice setup, but, it has only one possible position for the scope and not near enough adjustment to move it where I need it. It seems about 1" farther forward than the old 4X scope was. The Aetec has 5" eye relief in 2.8 power but it loses that as power goes up. I have to REALLY move my head forward alot to get the proper eye distance. I'd like a base/mount setup that lets me move the scope back far enough to just snap my head up on the stock and line up at the proper distance.
Is there anything out there that will allow this for me without having to shorten the stock to get it done. I haven't tried removing the recoil pad to see if this improves the eye relief thing but that will be the next step before shortening the stock.
Does weaver (or anyone else) make a one piece for the Savage that allows adjustment?
Any other ideas?
