Question for Fred M.
« on: August 29, 2004, 12:05:06 PM »
How easy (or possible) would it be to ream a Handi 30-30 to 7.62x54R?  I have a hankering to do that since my Mosin is shot out.  I'd end up with a .308 bore instead of a .310 or .311 to boot. What I'm not sure about is extractor function and bolt thrust.. that head is fairly big.

Why not just get another Mosin? There are a lot of these rifles available on the market, and even the best grades are relatively cheap. The Handi will readily handle the 7.62X54R, but why bother?

Haywire Haywood.
The bolt thrust should be ok since the Rusky has a bevel on the case head.
The ejector would have to be modified to suit the larger rim. Or grind the 30-30 ejector down. A 45-70 ejector could be used but would need about 0.020 build up. Myself I would not do it. Turn your 30-30 into a 30-30AI for a much better cartridge. Fred M.

Doh  ... thanks, one more time not searching has bitten me in the Gluts.

thanks for the replies, I'm still running it around my skull, but I'm leaning away from it after reading this and the other 2 threads.
