Which Frame for my 45-70?
« on: August 09, 2004, 12:13:39 PM »
A question for you actual 45-70 Handi owners?

I have the straight comb 30-30/12 gauge combo action and the .223 monte carlo comb action and am wondering which one will be best with a 45-70 barrel shooting iron sights.  It may get a scope for some special occasions but mostly it will be shot with open sights.

Is the monte carlo too high for the iron sights on the 45-70 barrel?

You will not be able to line up the iron sights of the 45-70 with the Monte-Carlo stock. I suggest using the (SB-1) receiver of the 30-30 / 12 gauge combo for the 45/70 barrel and iron sights. I have a 45/70 barrel which came on an SB-1 receiver from the factory and has had among others a 12 gauge barrel added and it shoots great with the regular stock. Also if you decide to mount a scope on the 45-70 barrel you can still shoot it with the regular stock. It's not only the best way to go but the only way to go also...<><....

MSP, that's exactly the info I was looking for and kinda suspected it was the correct answer but wanted some confirmation from someone who has been there and don it

I might put the order on hold till after the big game seasons since the 30-30 handi is high on my list for hunting this year.  If not the front line gun, it will be the back-up.

Guess I'll go ahead and get the ml barrel too.  I dont need either of these barrels.  already have more ml guns than I can confess to the wife and the 45-70 spot is well handled by an 1885 High Wall, but a light weight 45-70 for light bulets could find some use.

Thanks again.

LC, I have a 45-70 barrel that is mounted on a SB2 Ultra frame.  If I didn't use a scope, I'd have a hard time using open sights because of the monte carlo stock.

One suggestion I might make is to send in which ever reciever/stock you want to have the 45-70 put on, if it happens to be an Ultra, include in your order a new straight buttstock for a Handi Rifle.  That way you don't have to send in the 30-30 and risk not having it for the deer opener.  You can switch the buttstock when you put your 45-70 barrel on with open sights.

It's a-lot easier to raise your comb up...than try to lower it...but a very nice accessory to add to these little Handi's is a Morgan adjustable recoil pad...I did one for my old H&R  30-30 Topper a few years back...they do give you a-lot of up and down adjustment, and toe in and out, for fine tuning the stock comb to you.....and they aren't to difficult to put on,just fitting the aluminum plate to the dimensions of the stock by filing it down and then emory cloth out the file marks, and it looked kinda neat on it( wished I had taken some pictures of it ...but I didn't)

That's another good option.  OTOH, switching the buttstock to use either the 45-70 or the ml barrel would get to be a bit more than I'd want to do especially in the field.  There's no rush on any of this anyway.  I have no projected projects or hunting expeditions in mind for the handi 45-70 or ml gun so once the season is over most of my shooting in the field is with .223's.

Good idea though :-)
