Rem. 7600 Reduced Loads
« on: September 01, 2004, 03:03:28 AM »
I'm looking for a reduced load for my 7600 carbine (30-06). Because of a shoulder injury and two surgeries on it, I have become recoil sensitive.

I'm looking for something for either a 30-30 170 gr bullet or 165 gr NOSLER.

I hunt the Adirondacks and most shots are well under 100 yds.

Thanks for any help.

If you reload, go to Hodgdon's site and then select data. There will be a "youth" selection listed which is a listing of several reduced loads. For factory ammo, Remington and I believe Federal have reduced loads.

I don't know much about them, but you may also want to look at Remingotn's Managed Recoil loads. I saw a box of the 270 loads and on the back of the box it talked about using them for deer inside of 200 yards or something to that extent. These could make a good alternative if you don't handload.

The load I use in my 760 carbine is a "reduced load", though its in 180 grain.  With it I was trying to duplicate .303 British and .300 Savage velocities because of the effectiveness of these rounds with expanding bullets.

I loaded 180 grain ballistic tips in front of 47.2 grains of IMR 4320.  This load produced 2470 fps, and bang/flop results on Ontario whitetails (and one moose) shot at under 100 yds.

There is plenty of room with this powder to further reduce the charge if you still find the recoil uncomfortable.

Rick,
What caliber are you shooting and what bullet have you tried?

Mine was a Remington 760 carbine in 30-06.  I formerly used a couple of bullets here in Canada that are no longer manufactured.  When the Nosler Ballistic Tip came out I tried and loved them.  I haven't tried any of the newer polymer tipped bullets or Remington Bronze Points (the Remingtons weren't sold here at the time).  I would expect good results from any expanding bullet, but the proof would have to come out in actual use.

I've now switched to .35 calibre rifles and bullets I swage myself, but I still have the carbine, and I've also acquired a BAR in .308 that I would readily use ballistic tips in (at this velocity) if I go back to factory mfg. bullets.

WD242, I too have old shoulder injuries although I have not had surgery yet. I lived in constant pain until I finally quit shooting my bows. I also found that a quality recoil pad like a Packmayer Decelerator(my favorite) helped a lot. I have given up the 375H&H and larger bore guns also but still shoot 30 cal. It's amazing what I can kill with my 257 weatherby and a well placed 120gr. Nosler. The big bores do have a place in the hunting world, like Brownies in the alders, but for 90% of our hunting a 25 to 30cal rifle works fine if we can shoot it well. Guess I rambled a bit. But IMO a 180gr. bullet at 300 savage velocities in your 30/06 carbine with a premium recoil pad should work well for you. Any good loading manual should give you loads. Hope this helps, Byron

Although I haven`t tried, I`ve read about both Remington & Federal reduced loads.  Remington rduces the bullet weight, & Federal reduces the powder charge.  They both claim they`ll kill deer and at least 1 claims 30/06 recoil feels like 30/30.
