Because the new 20 gauge sabots slugs are so deadly and accurate.   :wink:  Think 45-75 performance when used on thin skinned game like whitetail.  And if you have a deer that can't be killed with a 260 45 caliber bullet (saboted) shot out at 1700fps - 1900fps from a 20 gauge shotgun, that's one big moose/deer.   :lol:

Ballistics, trajectories, and velocities on the new slugs are amazing for a deer slug.  To get the same 20 gauge velocity and trajectory from the 12 gauge slugs requires alot more recoil.  From a tree stand my ultra 20 is perfect, it has almost no recoil (weigh's around 12lbs with scope, sling, extra shells on stock, etc).  The 12 gauges I've used in the past (870's mainly) rocked me pretty good up there, especially when I was out of position a bit.

Oh, and Iowa only allows shotguns.  :cry:

I have not hunted with my slug barrel for two years, after having bought a .308.  Its a 12.  When did they start producing 20 gauge sabots?

I totally agree with the ballistics of the 20 and now that would be a great deer gun.  I might have to start hunting for a 20 gauge slug barrel :eek:

I have a Survivor in .223 that I will be using for yotes and bobcats if I am lucky enough. Also planning on using my 45-70 for black bear. Judging from the recoil and ballistic charts, the cartridge seems like good bear medicine.  :grin:

I live in KY and any centerfire rifle, shotgun, or BP is legal. You can even hunt deer with a .380 pistol if you wish. I came to use the 20ga. Pardner quite by accident. I bought this youth model for my grandson a few years ago. He shot it a lot but always complained about the recoil. So I got him a youth 243 and he has been knocking deer over for 2 years with it.  I have several guns, both shotguns and rifles, to hunt with. But there is just something refreshing about hunting with this little gun.  I purposely hunt in the thickest cover I can find and 50 yards is a long shot. I do not in any way feel undergunned with the 20 ga. In fact I now try to use the Pardner for all my hunting and have a ball.

I felt pretty much the same way during BP season.  I would always use my bow instead, cuz i love bowhunting.  I am taking the plunge this year and going to BP, mainly because the late BP season (last two weeks Dec, 1st week Jan) is usually really cold and using a bow then is rough.  That will be the Huntsman's time to speak...

I hunted two years with a Mossberg Crown Grade with a scoped rifled slug barrel.  Never had a problem dropping deer.  Back home, i took my fair share of bucks with buckshot around the subdivision we lived in, which is where most deer hang out.

I might could pick up a 20 gauge.  :wink:

Deer season starts here Sept 15 (urban doe archery).  They gave us an extra 2 tags on our license (6 total) this year and we can purchase an additional 2 doe tags for private land hunting.  I hate to say it, but what we need is more hunters not more tags. (or wolves and mtn lions)  Most folks kill 1, or 2, a year and that's it...  Anyway, off topic.

It was great to get some testimonies on the good ol' 20 gauge!!!

I'll be using my 45-70 and 20 ga. tracker in the treelines since both are not scoped. I'll use the 300 coreloks and the win. bris. sabots. For open country the win. 30-30 using 150 gr. coreloks. archery pse nova v-4 and bp cva staghorn.  :-D  :-D  :-D  I think that about covers it :music:

Tommy, how do you like that PSE NOVA V4?

I use a PSE NOVA One-cam.  ITs a fast bow, but has lots of 'recoil'.

I have just updated my archery equipment.  I replaced my old Pearson Spoiler with a brand new Archery Research "AR34".

That is what I will be hunting with come Oct 1st :grin:

I've handled those AR's.  They are a great choice IMHO.   When my current setup goes kaput, that might be my next choice.  I am really impressed with the brace height of those bows, pretty accurate and easy shootin i bet.

Deer only here in SC. Will swap off between synthetic 30-06 and Ultra 25-06. Got one with the 25-06 last year, but bought the 30-06 at the end of the season and didn't score with it. Will probably take it out first.

first season i hunt will be blackpowder(i dont shoot things w/ pointy sticks but next year that will change :P ) it'll be my huntsman .50 w/hornady 240 xtp sabots on top of 90 gr of BLACKPOWDER. the huntsman will shoot 3/4'' at 75 yds and 1 1/2-2'' at 100. its topped w/ a bushnell 3-9x40 trophy. it will also go on a youth hunt(i'm 15 yrs eld). next will come my ultra :twisted:  ''wicked'' :twisted:  slug hunter 20 ga. its got a synthtic stock/forend and is topped with a bushnell elite 3200 3-9x40. it is also my ''bad'' weather gun 'cause it has a coat of brownells metal-coat epoxy on the barrel and the scope has rain gaurd. it shoot the win part gold 260 gr sabots it will stay in side 3'' all day at 100 yds. it has no problem w/ deer size game out to 160 yds(6'' groups). it will also go on a youth hunt where shotguns a required. i also use it where rifles are alowed when shots are under 200 yds or when the weather is bad. i will use my :-D  brand new :-D  handi-rifle .280 rem w/a synthetic stock/forend. it is topped w/ a simmons 44 mag 3-10x44. i will use either win ballistic silver tips or win fail safe(still deciding :? ) both in 140 gr. my pardner 12 ga. and .410 will take squirrels and rabits when season starts in SEPTEMBER :-D

I'll be hitting the woods early, next week actually on my annual summer hog hunt in east Texas. Just re-checked my sights on my .280 Handi Limited Edition, Camo-Laminate beauty, with medallion in stock. Since it is the only Handi-Rifle I own I guess that is what I'll be using on deer also. This rifle had its debut two seasons ago and it really tags the deer and hogs very well. Very underrated caliber.

Load will be the Remington 150gr. PSPCL.

I'll be using my Handi in 45/70 like I have for the last 13 years and a whole bunch of one shot deer.  Only change I'm making is switching from the various 300 gr jacketed to the speer 400 gr FN at around 1750 fps. I did finally use my Ruger #1 in 6mm again last year for one deer(it's a great rifle and I was feeling guilty), and had forgotten how it is using those puny calibers.  Back to the 45/70.
