I'm not sure it gets any weirder
« on: July 30, 2004, 02:22:31 PM »
So I'm out back today at my range practicing shooting my 44 Handi  offhand. (50 yards) I walk down to have a look at my target and when I look up, off to my left at 25 yards is a doe! At this point I have been shooting for nearly an hour, and have fired 40 rounds! We watched each other through the brush for a minute or so and she cautiously went on her way. I have spooked her several times in the last couple of weeks, I figure that she has been "put off" for bit by momma as day before yesterday I saw the first fawn tracks I have seen this summer. I figure momma is a bit testy with taking care of this new one right now and don't want anyone else around to distract her. A fawn is a lot to look after what with coyotes, feral dogs and such looking for a meal. Won't be too long before they are one big happy family again. Huntin' don't start here untill November, at which time of 20,000 or so deer in the county, not one will be seen.

At the local range deer are a constant problem, frequently we have to shut down because deer come out on the active range and risk getting killed behind the target boards, so the RO not only has to watch the shooters but also has to keep an eye out for deer as the shooters usually have tunnel vision as to what's happening when they are shootin! I only know of one that's bit the bullet when it walked behind the 100yd muzzleloader/rimfire target boards. The gunfire has no affect on them as far as hearing the shootin, they just ignore it....

Last month, I saw a skunk walking up the lane from the pond towards my house. I picked up a paintball gun and went out on the deck. The gun going bang and the paint splashing around him didn't bother him until one nicked his belly and he raised up and glared at me. A couple more shots and he headed off into the field. That was the goal, he had been heading towards the cat and I did not want a skunk sprayed cat trying to rub up against me.

Another time, I decided to have fun with a cottontail. Got him right behind the shoulder from the living room window. I could hear the hollow thump of paintball meeting ribs. He turned around, took a couple of hops, and went back to eating the grass. This is not a quiet paintball gun, and those paintballs have got to hurt, especially with the power set higher than the paintball fields allow.

We have the same problem here at the range in Fairbanks, only it's Moose.  It's not unusual to see a cow or a cow with calves walk right out onto the range while shooting.  Never a bull just cows.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I was shooting my 357 Herret the day before deer season, and a 8 point buck ran up to the cardboard box that I had the target taped to and smelled of the box. I guess he thought the box was alive or something because the box would jump everytime I shot. It was on my own land and it sure was tempting to open season a little early. Digger
