45 Colt Bisley Vaquero Help
« on: July 27, 2004, 12:24:56 PM »
I plan on using a 45 Colt Bisley Vaquero to hunt Black Bear over bait in Maine next month. The load I just shot is 22.5 gr. Lil'Gun pushing a 300 gr. LBT LFNGC, it clocks 1335 fps out of the 5 1/2" barrel. It grouped about 1/2", two inches below point of aim @ 25 yards, windage is perfect. I would like to tweak the load if possible to hit dead on @ 25, what do you think I should do?

back off your load a half a grain at a time till you get there Jeff. Youll find little difference in killing powder between 1100fps and 1300

Jeff ...

I think you should call me and my 5.5" Vaquero to hunt with you. That's what I think you should do.

Nice Ruger ... I love those six shooters. My is blued with case-hardening.

Lyoyd, I dropped the charge 1/2 gr.. Five shots made one figure 8 shaped hole 1 1/4" low. It raised the POI 3/4". I'm going to drop the charge by another half and see what happens. Thanks for the help.
Bigjeepman, sorry the Maine hunt is booked up. Maybe I could interest you on a Virginia deer or turkey hunt this fall.

Jeff,
If reducing the load dosent do the job for you, Try some 325 gr. loads
Thats what i had to do with one of mine, It looks just like yours.actually i like the 325s better than the 300s. I'm sure you will get it figgered out.
Good luck...........Joe.................

I reduced the load another 1/2 grain. I'm at 21.5 grains of Lil'Gun now. The velocity out of the 5.5" Vaquero is about 1260 fps. Just for the heck of it I shot some through my Low Wall to see what difference a 24" barrel makes. The Low Wall clocked 1640 fps. Anyway the Vaquero is still hitting about 1/2" low @ 25, I'm not going to reduce this load any more. It will do for the bear hunt, but I'm going to try heavier bullets later.
BTW I have a identical pair of 45 Bisleys and they shot within a quarter  inch of each other with the same load. Ruger's sight regulation is pretty impressive.

Jeff
I really like those grips. Had a chance to buy some @ last gunshow but bypassed this desert for more of the main meal (powder & bullets).
Good luck on the hunt.
