Re-bore 8X57 to 338/06AI or 375/06AI
« on: June 18, 2004, 03:57:23 PM »
I saw a neet sporterized Mauser 98 in 8x57 and was wondering if it would be possible to rebore it to 338/06AI or 375/06AI.  It has a barrel with a full length rib.  It looks very nice.  Crown is a little banged up.  Thats why I was wondering about reboring.

Thanks,

bigboar :-)

If you want to rebore your barrel I would try contacting a fellow named
Cliff LaBounty. He specializes in this type of work. His address is...

Why rebore? - Why not just rebarrel?

PS: I would pick the >>>> 375 <<<<

Or just rechamber to 8mm-06, either the normal or the AI version.  Both great cartridges, and a lot less trouble then a rebore. - dan

I personally would never have a barrel rebored, maybe rechambered, but not rebarreled. I don`t know what they are asking for the gun, but you can pick up a good 98 action on a military rifle for around $ 90 or less. To have a real good baeerl put on it another $ 275. Stocks are $ 75 and up to what ever you want to spend. If you want a real good trigger another $ 150. I`ve alwasy got a couple of old rifles or actions laying around in case I get a wild hair. If you really like the wood on the sporter you found you could rebarrel it to any round with a .476 case head for a round $ 250 extra and have the cal, you want.

I understand you're re-boring because the barrel has a rib.  That makes sense -- it would cost too much to obtain a new barrel with a rib.

I'd say go to 8mm-06.  Thats a good round, much underestimated nowadays, but pretty close to the .338-06.

I'd stay away from AI rounds -- they don't give you enough difference in velocity to make a difference.
