Most of you may have already heard about this virus, but I thought I would post just the same.

If you get an email with the subject "Osama Bin Laden Commits Suicide"  DO NOT OPEN IT!!!

It has a particularly nasty virus attached to it.

go to your local PC store and purchase (and then install) McAfee internet suite. this will handle all that garbage !

the freebie stuff doesnt work, McAfee does. also, i don't work for them !

I have used both McAfee and Norton and here's what I have found out. Those who are the hackers and such will design their viruses, worms, etc. to overcome the most popular programs first; i.e., Microsoft, etc. If you run some program that is popular, while you have protected yourself, it is not the most complete protection you could have. McAffe and Norton are two of the most popular anti-virus programs out there today. The best anti-virus programs are those that constantly monitor traffic to your computer while you are online.
I now use TrendMicro's PC-Cillin which can be purchased at a local computer store or can be downloaded and upgraded to the full version by using a credit card or whatever. These are the same guys that have the popups about the free virus scan that you see sometimes. This is a good company and the free virus scan is worth giving a try. They have the most up to date virus database I have ever found. The full version of PC-Cillin has a "RealTime Scan" feature that constantly monitors internet traffic and this version also gives you the option of locking out all internet traffic when a virus is detected trying to infiltrate your machine. This version also monitors incoming and outgoing mail from the Pop3 servers such as YahooMail and HotMail. Here's a couple of links:

In order to get the trial version click on the "Try Now" link and then on the next page, choose the link marked "Note: For Trial Downloads only". You will have to uninstall any other anti-virus programs you are currently running in order for it to work.
It's worth the trouble though and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Trendmicro's PC-Cillin sounds a lot like Zone Lab's ZoneAlarm Pro which I've been using.  It also constantly monitors your computer's incoming as well as outgoing traffic including your mail.  It also blocks most pop-ups and gives you the option of locking out all internet activity.  I have had zero problems since I started using it about a year and a half ago.

I agree with what lik2hunt said about McAfee & Norton, they are okay but incomplete.  I also agree that the more popular anti virus software is targeted more by the hackers.  To their warped way of thinking it's a bigger feather in their cap to defeat one of the giants.

I'm pretty sure it's the same parent company that makes both. I forgot about ZA Pro - thanks for the reminder, it's just as good.

MaximumPC recently rated all the major players in the AV field, Norton was rated best, and surprizingly AVG 6.0 Free version was rated as good as Norton, just without all the bells and whistles. McAfee was rated below AVG in detecting virii and ease of use and IIRC was a resource hog, thus it's lower rating. I'd be using AVG as we speak if it would work in a network environment. Had way too many problems with McAfee software conflicts before I switched to Norton. I don't recommend McAfee to any of my customers because of the problems I have personally dealt with related to it. I have used AVG on all the PCs I've built and my customers are happy with it as long as they do regular updates which AVG does more frequently that Norton. For a free AV, AVG is a very good option, just requires a little more user intervention.

I have got norton internet security 2004. It's fantastic for the viruses. And it will detect adware and spyware. But for some reason it will not delete them. So I got  spy sweeper and window washer from webroot.com. .  Spy sweeper takes care of the other stuffand it will even search where the adware and spyware have been and delete the traces. window washer also washes the files. Don't know how it does it, but it is fantastic also. Actually, I called gateway and they recommended it. If you get it trough gateway you save a lot. It cost me 39.95 for both disks and if I would have bought from webroot.com I would have paid double. That's one reason I haven't posted for some time. Didn't want to spread any adware. :D  :-D  :-D  :grin:

I have Mcafee on my system.  I also use Ad-aware AND Spybot (both are shareware).  I used to use Zone alarm also.  But I am currently running through a router so it provides a firewall so that I don't really need Zone alarm for a firewall.  It takes a combo of all these to get crap cleaned from my machine.  There is some great info on Kim's website.  Check it out.
