Josh,
I had a Rem. 7400, that needed SB dies to feed reliably, in cold weather. My son has
a .Rem. 700 , in .270 Win, and when I acquired this particular Rem. 7400, I tried
using the FL RCBS dies I had for the 700. I had a couple of failure to
feed problems, during load development, but I blamed it on different powder
charges not cycling well. Once I settled on an accurate load, the F/F problems
seemed to go away until we checked the zero, on a cold weekend in November.
It became clear to me that I needed to try SB dies. I did, and the gun never
F/F after that. So, to be on the safe side, now for any semi-auto hunting rifle,
I use SB dies, and to date, have had no F/F problems that I could attribute to
case sizing. So, I if you are buying new dies, I would suggest SB, if you already have
FL sizing dies, be sure and check the feeding of your selected ammo at the ends
of your hunting conditions temperature ranges. SB dies just push your brass
back to the minimum spec size, rather than a nominal spec size. Other than
working your brass a bit more, there is no real issue with using SB over FL
dies. The SB sized ammo does give me more confidence that my bolt is going to
slam home, on a fresh round, in an automatic shoot gun.
