ammo for new handi .280
« on: July 20, 2004, 04:40:32 AM »
I just got a new Handi-rifle in .280 cal. I sighted it in using Hornady light magnums in 139 gr. moly coated bullets. The best group I got was 2.5 in. at a hundred yds. Can anyone recommend a factory load that will shrink my groups? I don't handload. Are there any other suggestions as to how I can make my gun more accurate?

My 280 shoots the Remington 140 gr core-lokts pretty good about 1-1.25" @ 100 yards, I also have some ammo loaded by Wisconsin Cartridge Company which also uses the 140 gr core-lokt that shoots about 1" @ 100 yards.

My .280 seems to like the cheap Remington Core-Lokts also. I can get  near 1 MOA from a make-shift rest over the seat of an ATV with them.   That's good enough to take anything I intend to shoot at with it.

Mine likes the 150 gr. coreloks also. About 1.25 or less at 100 yds. They chrono at 2975 fps.also.  When it cools off some I'll try some handloads with  the 140 and the 150 gr. Nos. BT's .
I think I can get 3100 fps. with the 140's fairly easily, with better accurcey I hope.    Digger

These rifles are not easy to benchrest. Start with the front bag back close to the hinge pin. Try holding the gun pretty firmly, and in different ways. You may end up with the forward hand between the rifle and the pag, gripping firmly. Good luck and good shooting.

Ooops... Sorry, forgot to mension above that those were 140 gr.  Core-Lokts I've been shooting.  Have not tried 150 gr. version yet.  Haven't seen the need so far.  By the way I've been getting them thru www.sportmansguide.com for around $13 a box if you'ld like to check them out.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'll try some Corelokts if I can find some around here. There are not a lot of places that sell .280 ammo in this part of the country. I may have to order from the Sportsman's Guide.

I'll have to agree with the crowd. I have a .280 Limited Edition and it absolutely loves the 150 gr Rem. Cor-lokts. Have taken a deer and hog with them and they are great. I could not keep them out of the ten-ring at 100 yds.
