Where's all the rabbit hunter's????!

Just wanting to see how many die hard beagler's were browsing these forums.
So anybody puttin a hurtin on the ole rabbit population this year?
Not to many things I enjoy more than hearin a pack of dogs comein round on a hot trail...

Sold our pack 4 years ago. We have been sad since, they were #1 hunting dogs. We have started rebuilding from scratch this year and won't be burning up any bunnies till this coming fall.

Beagles by nature with little or no traning hunt rabbits. They bark alot, and use their super nose to follow a bunny's "cold tail" (a rabbits path that can be several hours old). Cool thing about beagles and rabbits is that 90% of the time, a rabbit , once jumped, will circle back to within 30 or so feet of the origional spot he was jumped. Quite often  rabbits will run in a half mile circle, making for a exciting chase. The "voice" of each dog can be reconized at 1/4 mile. We get a kick out of "hearing" what dog is in the lead. Rabbits will run several hundred yards ahead of the dogs and wait on them to catch up alot. It's alot of fun to watch dogs use their noise to follow his trail. Anytime a rabbit wants, he can go to a hole and be safe, that leads me to think rabbits have fun out running dogs. Dogs rarely catch a live rabbit. Beagles also can tell the difference between rabbits, once the chase is on, any new rabbit that jumps is ignored until the first chase is over. These little beagles never stop amazing me as to their team work and dedacation to the hunt.

BTW, common house cats will and do kill many rabbits. Statistically they kill one rabbit per cat per night. Not all cats hunt them but I've seen first hand the damage cats do.

So pretty much you are saying if ya hunt rabbits and see any cute little kitty's in youre favorite hunting spot it's open season on the feline's??
I agree one hundred percent!!!, We also like to shoot the fox, coyote, and if we see a hawk we like to scare them off as well...since their not a legal bird we just scare'em off...lol!

I don't know of any type of hunting that gives you more exercise, excitement, practice with you scatter gun, and pure entertainment than rabbit hunting over a pack of cracker jack beagles. There is something about the sound of those hounds running the rabbit the stirs one to his soul. At the end of the hunt, the hounds are still raring to go but you're tired from walking to get a spot for a shot . That does not diminish the joy that urges us out during the coldest, wettest, dreariest of days, only to have it brightened by the first jump and the ensuing race between Brer'Rabbit and "Ol Saddleback". The first time I was ever allowed to carry a gun was on a rabbit hunt. That ol gun was an Essex single shot 410, that I inherited from my brother, after he fell and stuck the barrel in the mud, and not knowing he had done so, shot it, causing the choke part of the barrel to be peeled like a banana. With the end sawed off, I was told to wait til I was real close to shoot a rabbit. I took them at their word and did just that, therefore honing my stalking skill for later life. sorry for such a long post. It just was one of those memories I enjoy sharing.

8) I love rabbit hunting with my beagles. Right now I only have 3 (2 male, 1 female) hunting beagles, but am looking to purchase a lemon and white female to breed to my lemon and white male. I wish there wore some jackrabbits around here, they sur would be fun to run with a pack of beagles.

My wife is dead set on getting a beagle cause they're so darn cute, and she's right, but are they hard to house train and keep quiet in the house?  She claims she'll never let me take it hunting, it's her companion when I go hunting, but we have a baby coming in May, so I think I'll take the beagle hunting.  How do I go about training it to hunt rabbits? Let me know, I need some  help.

Hi Selmer,

Check out my post to Armycar about rabbit hunting. Get your pup in the woods with a good, mature dog. A little bit of on the job training and a good measure of instinct and you should have the beginnings of a great hunter by the end of the season. By the way, you should try hunting hares, rather than cotton tails (if available) for some real excitment. Snowshoe hares don't run into burrows/holes, but keep running. Nothing better in this world than the braying of a good beagle hot on the scent of a tasty hare!

I do not own a beagle nor have I ever, but I do hunt rabbits for supplementation on a regular basis throughout the year. I hunt with a Black Lab. Here is how I do it when I want some quick supper and only have about an hour. The dog and I walk up the RR tracks behind our house which cuts through some badlands with a wide, flat, brush choked crick bottom. I stick a bell on her kneck and as we are taking the tracks I look for likely spots of brush or bushes and point her in (she knows the routine well!) all I have to do is stay up on the tracks and wait quitly listening for the bell and watching for movement out the corners of my eyes. Before long a streaking brush bunny zipping over the tracks usually catches my eye in time to shoot quick with my shotgun. When she scours the cover well, we simply just mosey up to the next likley spot. So, for me, when I hunt the RR tracks, it is actually a lazy mans hunt, but I am eating rabbit in record time! She is trained as an all around game dog and that is how I like to keep one of my dogs and the others are specialty dogs. The key for my rabbit hunting no matter where in this country is to let the dog do the work and the hunter is to be in a position to where he can see escape routes, be ready, and be still. Easy hunting! Fun hunting! Tastey Hunting!

Hey lawdawgy bet i could stir that memory back up some more. I just happen to have an old Essex 410. single barrel with a cut down barrel like you described  :)

Damn skippy.
 I have trouble with house cats around here & it ticks me off to see one in woods. I plant food plots for rabbits & do'nt hunt right here at the house to be able to train pups.Here kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty

Hello from Missouri.  I raise, hunt, trial and show my Beagle Hounds.
