Leupold Scope Mounting
« on: June 25, 2004, 09:33:39 PM »
I just bought a new VXlll 2.5-8 36mm Wide Duplex scope to go on my Browning 30-06 and the Max ring spacing for this scope is 5.1", same spacing as 3.5-10 50mm. This will be an extremely tight fit with my current Leupold mounts. The STD mounts have a screw on both sides of the ring unlike the new STD mounts with both screws on one side of the ring. The question is has anyone went through this and knows if it will work with these mounts or should I get a set of the new style mounts, these will definitely work, but would rather save my money after bankrupting my self for this scope?
Does anyone out there own this size and/or style reticle? What are your feelings on it? I am in CA, so I don't do a lot of long rang shooting like you Elk hunters, mostly quick shots at bucks in buck brush or forest 200 yards max under 100 most of the time?

Sorry, but just a bit confused.  In mounting a scope to a rifle there are bases that screw on to the rifle.  The rings hold the scope and are attached to the base.  There are many kinds of ring and base combinations even from Leupold.  It would help to know exactly what kind or style of rings and bases you have.
In most cases, put the bases on the rifle then put the rings on the bases.
Then remove the top half of the rings and lay the scope in the lower part of the rings on the rifle.  You may have to slide the scope forward or back to get the 1 inch tube of the scope to set in the rings.  Both rings have to contact the main tube of the scope completely. If this contact is obstructed by the power adjusting ring, the turret ring or the bell to the front lense you will have to change the bases or the rings.  Sometimes the bases can be removed from the rifle and turned 180 degrees to gain or loose a little length, depends on what you have.
If all is well so far, snug the top of the rings over the scope. Raise the "empty" rifle to your normal shooting position and check for proper eye relief. You may have to slide the scope forward or back in the rings to get a nice full field of view.
This is a very simplified version of mounting a scope. There are a lot more things to check and do.  If not sure seek Help.
The duplex should work great for your shooting conditons

..........You can use the same mounts-bases and if you need more room to move the scope then you might have to change rings......get "extended" rings that allow a extra 1/2" or more movement by having a extended foot that goes in to the same base but extends the position of the ring foreward or backwards from the normal spot ....they come in front extended and standard rear set or extended rear and standard front........one should fix your mount problem....be sure to check the fit of the scope position with your hunting clothes on and make sure you get a good full view of the scope view......the wide/heavy duplex should be great for larger game hunting and possible woods and cover shots.....hth..good luck and good shooting!!

I bought a new set of mounts and rings today and took the guess work out of it. The gunsmith mounted it and bore sighted it for $10 (not bad huh) and I am going out tomorrow morning to try it out, wish me luck.
