45 LC Advice

Just got a Rossi / Puma in 45 LC.  Seems like the reloading info is a lot like the 45/70.  Loads for antique guns and modern guns.  Since this a new gun I guess it will handle the hotter stuff.  Where is a good source for up to date info.  All of my manuals list fairly mild loads compared to what I see listed on the net.  Also what game has been talked with this round.
This may be an old topic but I have an old computer and searching old topics takes for ever.

For suitable loads for your .45 Colt Rossi, try searching the Web for articles by John Taffin and Paco Kelly.  Both are huge fans of the .45 Colt in revolvers and lever actions using pistol loads.

Other posters have described feral pigs and even bears taken using this caliber combination.

As you know, Rossi also chambers this rifle in the .454 Casull caliber.  This is a quantum leap over .45 Colt power and capability when you are comparing factory loads.  I personally do not hotload this caliber, but if you choose to, Taffin and Kelly will have the info.

If you can find one, the Hodgdon #26 reloading manual has the best high performance 45 Colt loads I have found. Well worth the hunt. Their new manual probably has the same information.

I like 21.5gr H110 under a 300gr jacketed (Hornady or Sierra) for hunting and 10.0g Unique under a 250g Hornady XTP or 240g Sierra JHC for practice.

I get 1450 fp with the hunting load and 1200fps with the practice load out of a 16" Win94 Trapper barrel.

You can load them hotter/faster but I found these loads to yield the best accuracy and still have enough power for my purposes.  All shoot to the same point of impact in my rifle.

In both weights the Sierras seem to print slightly smaller groups than the Hornadys. All shoot 1.5 moa or less in my scoped trapper.

I haven't had much luck with cast bullets in this rifle to date.
