Hello, this is my first post here and just wanted to say what a great place this is, best all around site on the net imho. Anyway...how many people here shoot a BAR? I shoot one in the '06 with the BOSS and it has been the most accurate rifle I have ever shot. Anybody else get incredible accuracy with theirs? Im hesitant to even quote group sizes for fear of being branded a liar right out the gate. Thanks.

I'm on my 3rd BAR and all have been very accurate. My current one is in '06 w/out the BOSS and will do 1" groups if I do my part.

I have a .308 BAR and it is as accurate as any bolt action.  It is sighted zero at 150 yards and will shoot 1" groups.

I'm thinking of owning a BAR or whatever, not too heavy, semi-auto I decide is most reliable.  Accuracy is great but reliability is greater!

What about the BAR with the aluminum alloy receiver?  Durable?  About what will it weigh unloaded?

If the reliability is there with the BAR and they'd chamber it for the 358 Winchester cartridge--you'd have a very good "BEAR GUN."

I know of a guy who killed lots of grizzlies with a Remington Mod. 8 chambered for the 35 Remington cartridge.  Quite a few years ago as the Remington model would indicate.

Thanks,

I just recently got a BAR in 30-06 and started reloading for it right from the get go.  I tried Nosler Ballistic Tips in 180grn & 165grn and was very disappointed.  Best I could do with the 180's was 1.5-2" groups @100Yds.  The 160's were even worse, printing 2-4" groups.  I was paying strict attention to bench technique, and simply couldn't do any better.  I was beginning to question my shooting ability and was definitely questioning the accuracy potential of this particular BAR.

Then, someone suggested trying Sierra Game Kings.  (You can probably figure out the rest of the story....LOL)  I worked up 12 loads using IMR-4831 starting at 52grns and ending up @ 57.5grns.  7 of the 12 groups shot sub MOA @ 100 Yds.  3 of the groups had one shot flyers that I know were definitely my fault.  The other 2 MOA+ groups were the two low charge groups (52 & 52.5 grns)

Charge.....Group
52.0......... 1.235
52.5......... 1.157
53.0......... 0.511
53.5 *......   1.596
54 *.........   2.823
54.5.........   0.829
55.0.........   0.646
55.5.........   0.846
56.0.........   0.761
56.5.........   0.620
57 *.........   1.300
57.5.........   0.781
Min..........   0.511
Max *.......   2.823
Avg.........   1.092
* Includes 1 Flyer

Overall average, including the 3 flyer groups, was 1.092" CTC
Exclude the 3 flyer groups and the average was 0.821" CTC
The average for the 7 sub MOA groups was 0.713" CTC

This was the first "work up" load for this bullet/powder combo.  I've got some "fine tuning" reload work to do now, but considering this "starting point", I would think that a reasonable goal would be 1/2" CTC groups @ 100 yds.  I may or may not get there, but it's sure going to be fun trying....LOL

I'll keep you posted on progress.

Alright, well here goes, I have been called a liar more than once over saying this, but....My BAR in 30-06 with the BOSS and a Leupold 3.5-10 will shoot 3 shot groups of .400 thousands using Remington 165 grain Core-Lokts bought at Wal-Mart at 100 yards. I would suggest trying this ammo before trying to work up a load to beat it. 150 grainers wont group under 1.5 moa in my rifle.

.400 = 4 tenths of an inch not 4 thousands.  .004 would be 4 thousands.  I can understand why folks might be just a little skeptical of someone saying they are shooting 4 thousands of an inch groups.  Wow, you could take your BAR ant take the benchrest world by storm....LOL

Now, 4 tenths (0.4"CTC) is believable.  One of the work up groups I shot with the Game Kings was 0.511"CTC.  You're quite lucky to be getting 0.4"CTC with of off the shelf Remington 165 grain Core-Lokts.  It just goes to show you that every gun is different, and some can be very particular about what you shoot in them.  Obviously, your gun likes the Remington 165 grain Core-Lokts.

Others may question the accuracy of a BAR because most everyone says that a bolt action is more accurate than a semi-auto.  That is a true statement! Otherwise, bolt actions would not dominate the bench rest competitions.  However, for hunting purposes, most folks consider 1 MOA the standard by which hunting guns are judged, and BAR's are quite capable of MOA and even sub MOA accuracy if you find the right load for each gun.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I think that with a little "fine tuning" of my Game King load, I will be able to consistently shoot 1/2" groups @ 100 Yds with my BAR.

Hello:  I'm new to forum too , so hi to all BAR owners here!

I just picked up a Belgium BAR , assembled in Portugal ,  in .300 Win Mag , and what a nice rifle to shoot.
I've always used a bolt action , but decided to try one of these out , only had it out once to try it before I bought it , it shot nice even in 300 Mag cal.
Now I have another better scope on it and the gas sysyem cleaned up so i'm ready to try her out again.

I can see the advantage of it already for hunting , if the second shot is needed , the gun is right there and ready to go again with no fuss and barrel jump.

Think I may even take it out moose hunting this fall here in Ontario...

Regards,
Bob
