Here is my "new" Virginian Dragoon. 44 mag, six inch barrel.

I spotted it in a shop, and knew I had to have it.

Extremely smooth. Great trigger. Beefy, but well balanced.

I had the exact gun myself. I am kicking myself for trading it off. It was a great shooting gun.

I'm really surprised how well made it is.

I like the feel of the grip a lot better than on my Blackhawks.

I believe it was made in 1981.

That's the first one I've seen. It sure looks nice. I wonder why they are not being produced anymore. Anyone know why?

If I may ask without offending anyone, how good was the deal?  I got mine at a pawn shop for $290 out the door - but it has the blued 8-3/8" barrel and a chip on one of the grip panels.

Shoots like a dream and I definately think it feels better than the Super Blackhawk frame.

Enjoy your Dragoon!

I got it for 2 bills.  (Don't tell anyone) :-)

The shop owner didn't know what it was. He figured it was a "Ruger Copy" or something......"some cheap import".

Needless to say, I scraped up the cash real quick.

Read this .pdf file for some good information.

http://www.singleactions.com/VADragoons.pdf

The fit and finish of the metal parts is excellent. The stainless finish is a very nice satiny shine with no tool marks.

The action is the Colt style, with four clicks, and is very smooth. The trigger break is very nice, with no creep whatsoever. The barrel is six inches, and it is a 44 Magnum. The cylinder is recessed for the case heads.

It has no transfer bar, and should be carried with the hammer down on an empty chamber. There are two little "index marks", one on each side of one chamber (very small dots), so you can make that chamber the enpty one, and know at a glance that the hammer is down on it.

It is made from 4140 Stainless steel.

It was made in the USA.

It shoots every bit as good as any Ruger I've ever owned. Maybe better, I didn't have a lot of time to get any groupings on paper. I just shot at a half dozen apples, and a pop can. It shoots to POA at 50 feet, for sure.

Recoil is very managable. The larger grip is a real plus for me. I can really hold onto it. I like the sights. A couple of quick kills on the apples were instinctive and easy. The trigger is a delight. The way they SHOULD be. No creep. Not light, and not heavy. Just right.

I didn't shoot any lead bullets, and the tight cylinder gap was not an issue with fouling, but I suspect when I do a lot of shooting, I'll have to take a LeadFree cloth to the cylinder face from time to time, to prevent it dragging on the forcing cone. There was very little gas escaping out the sides.

All in all, a very pleasant experience.

I got lucky and snagged this holster off Ebay. Fits the VD perfectly. Brand new, old stock.....Got it cheap, too!
