Marlin 38-55 chambers
« on: June 05, 2004, 05:52:41 AM »
Sure this has been discussed many times, perhaps some new info is available:
My 336 Marlin 38-55 slugged .3795 and using cast bullets of .380 from the NEI mold Walt made for me, it shoots darned well. Trouble is, the cartridges chamber hard due to the diameter of loaded rounds. When using smaller bullets for easier chambering the accuracy falls off big time.
Any new ideas here, Knowing I am not the only one to have this issue is Marlin doing anything to correct it?   :?

Problem is what can Marlin really do?? It is a problem with brass that is available being too short ( are you using Winchester brass?) try Starline but it isn't much better. Also finding the correct cast combo is a real pain...I know I never did and I tried many.
Try  a different set of reloading dies. I had Lees the first try and problems. Then I paid the extra and bought RCBS CB dies for the 38-55 and that helped.
In short I just sick of all the hassel and sold the entire rig, gun, dies, casts, etc. Then bought another Marlin CB 38-55 and replaced the barrel with a 35 Rem 24". It was a long way around to get a nice looking 35 Marlin 24' gun. It is beautiful though. But cost WAY too much.

The chamber can be opened up to accept the larger diameter bullets. This will solve all your problems. If I remember correctly, Marlin will perform this task for free, if you send the gun to them.
