308 or 7mm-08

Longwinters, well I do reload for my 7mm-08 ammunition is not available locally.  I currently use 139 grain Hornady Interbonds over 39 grains of IMR 3031 but the above mentioned critters fell to the same load with the standard hornady interlock btsp.  My 7mm-08 is a Remington Model 700 classic and has been accurate from the very beginning.  I had never spent much time at the range previous to a couple years ago so I bought the reloading equipment and the 7mm-08 and I try to make it to the range at least once a week.  This rifle and cartridge are pleasant to shoot and easy to reload for.  I consider myself a novice reloader and an average shooter so this rifle is helping me practice both!  I am currently looking at buying a Tikka T3 in 7mm-08 for my wife so I do believe in this little cartridge.

McRae.  sounds like a winning combination.  I to am reloading the 139 Interbonds for my Encore 7m-08.  Had a little trouble getting good accuracy.  Finally went with IMR 4350 and can shoot MOA.  But I still need more time at the range.  Thanks for the response.

357mag,

I'm form Brisbane, Australia a nd new to this website.

I havenever used a 7mm08 but I have no doubt that it will be  a fine calibre. I do have a Winchester pre 64 Model 70 fwt on 308 Win and it has been my all round (though not my only) rifle for some 20+ years. I have used it on pigs (boar) here in Australia and it is excellent medicine for them. I tend to use military ammunition as it is readily available and cheap and I pull the bullets (145 gr FMJ) and insert 130 gr Speer HP (with the big HP). They are absolutely dynamite on them and they rarely need a second shot if the bullet is placed right. Also, in the US, the 308 can be had in auto loader giving the quick second shot if needed. I had a Remington 742 carbine (20" barrel) with a pachmyr swing mount and a Leupold vari X-III 1.5-5X20 (before auto were banned here) and it was a very effective rifle in scrub and heavy timber. The 308 can in those circumstance be loaded with a heavy bullet 180gr RN or eaven heavier which my give it the edge over the 7mm-08 in this environment.

I would go for the 308 for two main reasons, vast bullet selection and the availability of cheap surplus ammo.

7mm/08
the only true advantage the .308 has is also a curse...surplus ammo...You need to practice with what you hunt with not some cheap junk!!! Don't take it the wrong way because that 7.62 nato stuff is fun in the backyard but...
I actually prefer the .284 cal bullet vs the .308 myself. smaller bullet same powder. also there is not a shortage in 7mm bullets at all if you handload actually there is a great selection just go to cabelas.com or somewhere and search for 7mm/.284 bullets you will find anything you want.

I have two .308s and two 7mm-08s.  I love both, but my favorite is the 7mm-08.  Both are excellent cartridges, but for whitetails, the 7mm-08 IS IT!  In fact, I recently purchased ANOTHER 7mm-08 - an original Tikka WH SS, NIB!  That's because, in part, I love the 7mm-08 THAT MUCH!

justice,

I guess you can use a cal. that is over matched for the game that your hunting.  If you consistently shoot for the shoulder or gut, I wouldn't blame you.  Check your shot .  I like the clean meat with a hell of alot less blood clot and bone fragment.  (this of course is talking about using the 25-06 for deer and hog)(I have taken down several mule deers with the said rifle also)
I know we are all different but, I never hunt just for meat anymore. I certainly eat the venison and enjoy it, but when I go deer hunting now it is for horns and if I am shooting at a trophy buck I damn sure do not care if the animal is vaporized. That is what the money is paid for. I love and respect the animals and will track a wounded animal as long as it takes to put it out of its misery. I do not want to sound callous but when shooting at a great buck I'm not worrying about meat loss.   Vernon

Damn that really is awful!  Do they have an NRA type organization out there?  Can't believe they'd go that far as to take your hunting rifle.  Here in the states that crap wouldn't go down without some real trouble.  Well hope you were able to stash it or something.  Just another reason for us to realize the importance of voting.

As to the 7mm/08 vs. 308, I use a 308 and really like it, but I'd go for the 7mm/08 or even a .260 Remington unless it's a designated Moose rifle.  But if you don't reload the 308 might be best for finding ammo.

I have both calibers.  If I could buy a new rifle right now and could only choose between these 2, I really don't know which I would chose.  It would probably be the 7m-08.  But only because I would like one in a Sako bolt action to match the 308.

I recently bought a NIB Tikka Whitetail Hunter SS - which is a RARE find these days.  I got it in 7mm-08.  Truth be told, though, a NIB short action Tikka WH SS?  Heck, I'd buy it even if it was a .308. :)
