Chamber alinement...Free Spin Pawl, hammer/triger kit????
« on: March 17, 2004, 02:40:14 AM »
one thing that is going to take sometime for me is learning how to quickly unload and reload my sbh...one thing I tend to do is index too far and have to skip the chamber till the next time around...adding alot to my reloading time...
I saw this advertised in Midway and Dillon and Cabelas...its called a Free Spin pawl...and is about 30 bucks...
are these a good Idea, or a bad one...
second, I notice there are hammer trigger kits available also for 150, making your ruger have three clicks including a half cock...which is suppose to make your chambers line up...
what says y'all...
oh, and who sells ruger's spring compressor??

I've seen a lot of people unloading Rugers with free spin pawls, and it seems to work very well, as it allows them to back the cylinder up to find the loading gate.  I don't know what the quality is on the 3 click kits, and would want to see one first, as that is a critical part.  The difficulty in loading/unloading is the reason I got rid of the Bisley I bought some years ago, and now shoot only 3-screw Rugers.

I've installed the Power Custom Hammer and Trigger kits from Brownell's ($160) in NM Rugers. They work exceptionally well. Nice light trigger pull, no creep, and they have the half cock notch so the cylinder will line up with the ejector. A little pricy but well worth it if you're a serious shooter. The parts are pretty much "drop-in" and require little or no fitting. All you have to know is how to take the gun apart and put it back together. The kit comes with a light trigger spring too.

I don't recommend the free-spin pawls. When you go to eject a cartridge, the ejector rod can scratch the inside of your chamber. The "half cock" hammer makes the ejector align perfectly and eliminates cylinder damage.

I have the free spin pawls in two of my Vaqueros and love them.  I went the extra step and smoothed the end of my ejectors rod and polished it up to reduce the chance it might cause any problems with the cylinder.

I have not had any problems with it and feel it is an excellent product.  Please note that, at least with my two guns, this was NOT a drop in installation and required some fitting.  BUT the instructions were very clear and easy to follow, all I needed was a couple of wet stones.

Hope this helps...

I bought the wolff spring kit...maybe I am inept, but taking apart and re assembling a SBH is a real challenge...I did get the re spin pawl, but chickened out on disassembling it that far...I am content with the spring change...

Don't feel alone, the New Model Ruger is difficult to disassemble and reassemble.  I wish Ruger had redone the design to the 3-screw conversion once he devised it.  I understand Bill Ruger said that if they had invented the conversion before the New Model, there never would have been a New Model.  Note that the New Model Bearcat is made like the conversion, still a 4-click and a half-cock loader.

:D The free spin pawl was developed for the cowboy action shooters. When you are reloading on the clock and you advance the cylinder to far you cant back up. Free spin saves time, you do not have to go all the way around to get to the chamber again. You just back up. As I understand this duplicates the action on some Colt and Colt clones. I really don't see any real problem with scratching your chamber. If it was a problem you could do it with the factory pawl just as easily. The three clicks just sound cool, and half cock probably helps unlock the cylinder bolt and pawl so the cylinder can free spin.JMHO

The free spin pawl actually does more than the half cock on a Colt or Old Model Ruger, which at half cock can spin clockwise, the free spin pawl allows the cylinder to spin either direction.

:cb2: I bought four of the free spin pawls and spring sets, and was going to have all my fun guns and CAS guns equipped with them. Didn't think I really needed them on my huntin' guns. However, I had just one gun done first, mainly to see how much it was going to cost me, and see how I liked the result. It was OK, but I wound up sending the rest of the kits back. I missed my clicks. I spin my cylinder, and ya don't hear nuttin. When ya spin the cylinder of SA handgun, it's just supposed to buzz with those little clicks. When it doesn't . . . well, it just ain't natural. It's kinda like those gay marriages in Kennedyland. It ain't what God intended. A sixgun without clicks just ain't what Samuel Colt intended neither. (Please note that I didn't use the "K" word and Samuel Colt in the same sentence. I wouldn't want to defile Mr. Colt that way.)

Well anyway, I figgered that I didn't really need the free spin pawl in my other guns, cuz I'm just never in such big a hurry that I need one anyway. Now if your really serious about time it might just come in handy, but I kinda like takin' all day.

Hey Jim,

:cb2: I agree. They are so much more fun to hold, shoot and clean. Like most folks who got into guns late I started out on automatics. Then DA revolvers, and then the good Lord gave me wiwisdomnd discernment and I stumbled into SA revolvers. Some of those autos are a real pain in the posterior to take down, but I sure love just pullin out that pin, and poppin' out that cylinder for cleanin'. Gettin old, fat, and lazy. At least somethin' can still be fun and easy.

By the way we wuz neighbors once. We used to live in Foat Wuth, and still make an annual pilgrimage there to visit friends. Sure do miss Texas.

Gent,s
You can do the modification on the pawl your selves. You can look at one of the pawls that someone has. And take a drimmel tool and carefully
buzz the corner off the one you have and it will work as well with alot less money out the door. I have a bunch of rugers and they all have this done to them and i've never had a moments problem with them. I know this will bring out the no sayers but it works for me. Have a good day Gent's.
