Wanting to try PPB in .45-70
« on: March 30, 2004, 01:07:47 AM »
Looking through my poor mould collection, the only likely candidate is a Lee 452-252gr SWC made for the .45LC. I can size it to .450"

I have a Shilen bbl w/1:15' twist and .450/.458 land/groove diameter. Can anyone comment on whether this twist is likely to stabilize shuch a short, light bullet?

If you're planning on shooting smokeless powder, 0.452 is right at where you want to be.  Black powder patching usually requires a smaller diameter to allow for repeated shots because of powder fouling.  To answer your question, yes you can size the bullet to 0.450.  Lee can make a sizer for you, but am not sure of the cost.  Personally, I'd try a heavier bullet than a 250 grainer.  The big advantage of patching is that it uses a pure, or nearly pure lead bullet that expands easily.  The greater mass of the bullet compensates for the parachute you are pushing throuh a critter and will give much better penetration.

Thanks, Castaway,

Actually, my question was not whether ZI could size it; I have the sizer. I am wondering if that 15" twist is likely to stabilize a bullet as short as this 252 grainer.

Any opinion? Of course, i'll try it, but not if it seems hopeless :?

it will probably stabilize it just fine. After all, it's the bullet length that counts, not the weight.
If you intend to go Paper patching, try some bullets from Buffalo Arms to get started. A cheap and easy fill for an experiment.
A ffew hints - you're shooting a 70, right ? - try 400-500 gr bullitts. If youre shooting smokeless, bullet diameter after patching should be .452 or so. If youre shooting the holy black, go with .450(bore diameter). This would put your bullet at an as-cast .443 with 9lb onionskin as a patch to bring it up to bore diameter.
Just my opinion of course, but i have been doing it a few years.I'm still working on that article for you; now that the PC is up and running, I cant find my scanner power supply. Do you have a fax? If so PM me.

Tommy is right on as usual.  Just wanted to add that I have had good luck with a NEI PP mould in my 45-100 Sharps. I have a 1 in 18" twist but the 500 gn. NEI would be worth a try With black powder. Just keep the alloy nearly pure lead  :D
