.45-120; Fg, FFg, or 1 1/2?
« on: April 19, 2004, 04:32:01 PM »
Just bought a Pedersoli Quigley, am researching load data.

Have seen references to three different granulations of the "REAL" powder.

I'd like to hear what granulations people like to shoot.

Rum River, From talking to those that shoot the long range matches with 45-100 and 45-110 rifles it seems that 1f does the job for many if not most of them. For my 45-90 Swiss 1 1/2  or 2f  or Goex 2f/cartridge  seems to be the ticket. The 45-120 with its additional capacity might have lube problems on hot days with finer grade BP especially in 34" barrels. Rbump

I used to use 4FA cannon powder in my 45-2 7/8 behind a 550 paper patch bullet. I have used black blasting powder with good sucess. When I ran out of the coarse powders I used 1FG Goex. The idea of using the coarse powders came from Elmer Keith and other noted gun writers. So in answer to your question 1 1/2 Swiss would be an excellent choice.
